BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: One arrested in Monroe morning murder

LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale announced about 12:45 p.m. [July 9] that Richard Roland Humphries, 48, has been arrested o suspicion of first degree murder in connection with the murder of 53-year-old Randy Shelton.
Shelton was shot at his home on Midway Road at about 3:50 a.m. today [July 9], according to police.
Humphries lives across the road from the Shelton home. Investigators still have not released information about the cause of the shooting.

BREAKING NEWS: LeFlore County Sheriff's Office investigates murder of Monroe man

LeFlore County Sheriff's Department is investigating the murder of a Monroe man that happened about 3:30 a.m. today [July 9].
According to authorities, someone knocked on the door of the home and began firing a gun through the door. The 53-year-old man's name who was killed has not yet been released by investigators.
The shooting happened at a home east of the Sugarloaf Christian Fellowship Church on Midway Road.
Authorities say the have a person of interest but no arrests had been made as of 7 a.m.
The road remains blocked by deputies as the investigation continues.

LeFlore County Detention Center Public Trust Meeting Scheduled for Wednesday

The LeFlore County Detention Center Public Trust regular business meeting has been scheduled for Wed., July 9, at 1 p.m. in the County Commissioner's Office in Poteau.

On Agenda for discussion will be the detention center's report and public appearance.

The Trust also will go into executive session pertaining to the following lawsuits:

A) Raymond Larry Nichols Case
B) Duane Sweeten Case
C) Denay Burris Case
D) Felicia Carshall Case
E) Elvis Thacker Case

Followed by any other business not known of at time of posting.

New council member to be sworn into office

July 7, 2014

Phillip Zearly, newly elected member of the Poteau City Council will be sworn into office tonight [July7] during the town's regular meeting.
The meeting will be held at Poteau City Hall beginning at 7 p.m.
Also meetings of the Poteau Public Works Authority and Industrial Authority will be held tonight.

Local Trooper arrested after wreck

A Thursday accident resulted in the arrest of a Trooper for driving under the influence.
Trooper Josh Davies, of Shady Point, was arrested in Sequoyah County after he wrecked his police vehicle that was towing an OHP boat on Applegate Cove Road south of Sallisaw, according to a statement released by OHP.
Davies reportedly tested above the legal limit during a breath test administered by investigating Troopers.
According to OHP he is on routine administrative leave pending the results of an internal investigation.

Traffic detoured for possible fatal wreck

[July 3 1:10 p.m.] Oklahoma Highway Patrol, LeFlore County EMS, LeFlore County Sheriff's Department, several other police and fire agencies currently are working an accident at U.S. Highway 59 and Oklahoma Highway 9 (Sallisaw Y). Traffic is being rerouted at Sunset Corner and west of the intersection.
According to radio traffic, a pickup and Semi trailer collision has possibly left one person dead and another injured.

Sidewalk repair continues

Sidewalks along Dewey Avenue are under construction today [July 1] as the city upgrades them to be handicap accessible. Crews are pictured working at the corner of Peters and Dewey.

Children's author to visit library

July 1, 2014

Children's book author Darleen Bailey Beard is scheduled to make a presentation as part of the Summer Reading Program at Patrick Lynch Public Library in Poteau.
Her children's program "Make Like a Tree and Leaf!" will start at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, for grades three through eight.
Beard also will speak and have a book-signing for all ages at the library from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

LeFlore County welcomes Maidens of Mayhem

A new derby team has hit the rink in Poteau. The Maidens of Mayhem formed a few weeks ago and are recruiting team members. .
The Maidens hone their skills on Wednesday evening at Skate-Reation.
According to Ashford, Skate-Reation owner Nancy Traywick has offered to help the team by opening the rink on Tuesdays from 8:30-10:30 a.m. for anyone 18 and older who is interested in learning about derby. A derby team member will be at the rink to answer any questions or work one-on-one with someone who would like to learn or practice skating for derby.
