Quinton man injured in Haskell County after motorcycle crash

A Quinton man was taken by life flight to the hospital after wrecking his motorcycle in Haskell County.

The accident happened Tuesday, July 14, on State Highway 9, two miles west of Enterprise.

According to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol accident report, Michael W. Scheidt, 57, was headed westbound on his 2003 Honda motorcycle when he failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the north edge of the roadway.

He was taken by life flight to St. Johns Hospital in Tulsa with a head injury. He was admitted in stable condition, according to OHP.

Hughes Drive closed for construction

Beginning this morning, Wednesday, July 15, Hughes Drive will be closed to traffic from Broadway to Butler.

Crews will replace two large tinhorns beneath the street and the work should take about three days, according to Poteau Street Commissioner Jim Seale.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — New Miss USA Olivia Jordan spoke of the need to discuss race relations en route to her pageant victory and hailed the diversity of women taking part in the contest during a post-pageant question about Donald Trump's comments on Mexican immigrants.

Jordan of Oklahoma was crowned Miss USA on Sunday, wearing a hot pink strapless dress with a full, flowing skirt as she smoothly navigated the interview portion of the competition to beat out 50 other contestants.

NWS declares heat advisory

A heat advisory remains in effect from 7 a.m. Monday, July 13, to 7 p.m., Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, heat index values from 105 to 110 will develop this afternoon and again Tuesday afternoon. Near full sun, light wings and warm overnight lows will combine to further add to the heat stress conditions, they said.

The NWS said the combinations of hot temperatures and high humidity will make a dangerous situation where heat related illnesses are possible.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality says smoke from enormous wildfires in Alaska and Canada is making the air in northwestern Oklahoma unhealthy.

The agency reported Tuesday that air quality monitors in northwestern Oklahoma have detected concentrations of fine particulate matter considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Much of it originated as smoke from enormous wildfires in Alaska and Saskatchewan.

Traffic is being rerouted between Poteau and Wister after an accident on U.S. Highway 271 [July 7 at 3:56 p.m.]

Motorists are urged to use the old Wister Highway to commute between Poteau and Wister until the road is reopened.

Injuries were reported in the accident, according to radio communications, but no other information is available at this time.
