Forestry Service issues high fire danger warning

High Fire Danger

Oklahoma Forestry Services is urging Oklahomans to be aware that critical fire weather will be present across the state tomorrow, and will most likely remain elevated at least until the weekend. As a result of these conditions, outdoor burning should be avoided until conditions improve.

Spiro stabbing update

March 11, 2014

One woman was taken to a Fort Smith hospital Friday [March 7] night after being stabbed in the neck by her boyfriend, according to Spiro Chief of Police Darrel Barham.
Barham said her boyfriend fled the area and officers are seeking a warrant for his arrest.
As of today [March 11], charges had not yet been filed in connection with the stabbing.

KTC unveils newest edition

Kiamichi Technology Center in Poteau is hosting a drop-in open house till 2 p.m. today [March 11]. During the open house the public can tour the new Emergency Medical Training Programs EMS building and Disaster Response and EMS Training Simulator.

10 arrested in drug sweep

March 10, 2014

Several Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies served narcotic search warrants at three Heavener homes Friday.
Jail records show 10 people were jailed on drug-related crimes in connection to the raids.
The District 16 Drug Task Force, Drug Enforcement Agency, Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, LeFlore County Sheriff's Office, Heavener and Pocola Police Departments, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms reportedly served the warrants.

Clover Run drawing near

Plans are finalized for the Red Oak 4-H 3rd Annual Clover 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, March 15 at 9 a.m.  Registration is from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. at the Red Oak Senior Citizens Center on Main Street, Red Oak.  The Entry fee on the day of the race is $10 and the first 100 entries will receive a T-shirt.  Profits from the Clover Run will be used to continue the Fair-Miller Park renovation project.

Police respond to possible stabbing

According to dispatch information Spiro Police and LeFlore County Deputies are responding to a possible stabbing in Spiro.
No further details are available at this time (March 7 at 8:40 p.m.).
Poteau Daily News will provide more details as they are released.

Trapped but not injured

March 7, 2014

Two people were trapped inside a pickup that wrecked in Panama Friday evening.
According to Panama Chief of Police John Whiteaker it took about 40 minutes to free the driver and passenger who were trapped by fallen, live electrical lines.

Double murder, suicide ruled in deadly housefire

March 7, 2014

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department has released on Friday [March 7] more details in a Whitesboro house fire on Monday that led to the discovery of three bodies.
According to Sheriff Rob Seale, 57-year-old Edith Custard and 80-year-old Lawrence Schlienz were murdered by Jacob Custard, 30, who then took his own life after setting fire to the house.

Family and friends are invited to share in their special day.
James and Jesse will exchange wedding vows on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at 5 p.m. at the Green Country Cowboy Church in Poteau.
The groom is the son of Jesse and Brenda Johnson of Arkoma.
The bride is the daughter of Larry and Beverly Loomis of Wister.
A reception will follow.

It's time to carnival

Ed Burlingame's Pride Amusements began getting rides ready Thursday [March 6] for tonight's grand opening. Gates open at 6 p.m.
The carnival is located in the vacant lot north of Car-Mart in Poteau.
