Police respond to possible stabbing

According to dispatch information Spiro Police and LeFlore County Deputies are responding to a possible stabbing in Spiro.
No further details are available at this time (March 7 at 8:40 p.m.).

Trapped but not injured

March 7, 2014

Two people were trapped inside a pickup that wrecked in Panama Friday evening.
According to Panama Chief of Police John Whiteaker it took about 40 minutes to free the driver and passenger who were trapped by fallen, live electrical lines.

Double murder, suicide ruled in deadly housefire

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department has released on Friday [March 7] more details in a Whitesboro house fire on Monday that led to the discovery of three bodies.
According to Sheriff Rob Seale, 57-year-old Edith Custard and 80-year-old Lawrence Schlienz were murdered by Jacob Custard, 30, who then took his own life after setting fire to the house.

Loomis and Johnson Wedding Announcement

James and Jesse will exchange wedding vows on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at 5 p.m. at the Green Country Cowboy Church in Poteau.
The groom is the son of Jesse and Brenda Johnson of Arkoma.
The bride is the daughter of Larry and Beverly Loomis of Wister.
A reception will follow.

It's time to carnival

Ed Burlingame's Pride Amusements began getting rides ready Thursday [March 6] for tonight's grand opening. Gates open at 6 p.m.
The carnival is located in the vacant lot north of Car-Mart in Poteau.

School Board meeting to discuss school year, land purchase, superintendent contract

Several items are slated to be discussed during the Poteau Board of Educations regular meeting Monday, March 10, at 6 p.m. at the Bert Corr Administration Building.
The 2014/15 school calendar will be discussed as well as an executive session that lists discussion on the purchase of land and discussion of the details of the superintendents contract.

Fort Sill Apache Tribe to celebrate 100th anniversary of POW release

Fort Sill Apache Tribe hosts a 100th anniversary event to commemorate the release from prisoner of war status of the Chiricahua and Warm Springs Apache Tribe, now known as the Fort Sill Apache Tribe.

The event will include a sunrise blessing, and an opening reception followed by a video showing and a former Tribal Princess reception.

Three people killed in Whitesboro house fire

Three people died in a house fire on Lennox Road near Whitesboro Monday afternoon.
The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department said names are not being released pending identification.

Weather related closings

The Carl Albert State College Poteau and Sallisaw campuses, which planned to open at 11 a.m. today [March 4] will remain closed.
All other schools in LeFlore County also are closed.
The LeFlore County Courthouse is open.

Road conditions changing, not for the better

March 3, 2014

At about 2 p.m. Monday [ March 3] area police warned that roads are becoming slushy but are almost immediately turning back to ice. The traction earlier provided by the gritty sleet is now becoming a mirror-like ice sheet on top of the already slick roads.
