A child is recovering in the custody of the Arkansas Department of Human Services after it was discovered she had been raped and assaulted.
Heath Wayne Talley, 26, of Pocola, was arrested on charges of rape by instrumentation and child abuse in connection with the child's injuries.
According to the LeFlore County District Attorney's Office, the child reportedly suffered burns from an electrical cord along with the sexual assault.

Former LeFlore County Deputies Burell Shipman and Dale Fout filed a lawsuit against the LeFlore County Board of County Commissioners in 2006. On Monday a jury was picked and the trial began.
Shipman and Fout allege in their petition against the commissioners they were owed payment for compensation wages and holiday pay. They claim Sheriff Roy Gentry approved the payments but when the payroll warrant was submitted to the commissioners, it was denied.
The two are seeking in excess of $30,000 each in back wages.
LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services and employees were honored during the annual Oklahoma Emergency Medical Technician Association banquet.
Anthony Stankowitz, 21, of Spiro, heard his name out called out during an awards ceremony last week in Tulsa as the 2012 Paramedic of the year. The award, which is peer based by nomination, recognized Stankowitz as the top outstanding Paramedic in Oklahoma.

LeFlore County Youth Services has announced that July 15 will mark its 38th year of service to LeFlore County.
According to an LYCS press release, LCYS was founded in 1974 after a steering committee had been put together with the aim of providing an alternative to jail for teens. That same year, LCYS received its first funding and opened an emergency shelter. Since then, LCYS executive director Richard Couri reports that he has seen 6,087 children spend 39,166 days in the care of LCYS, the average stay being just over six days.
In an announcement that’s sure to please the parents of Shady Point students, Shady Point School Superintendent Bruce Gillham announced Wednesday that Shady Point Schools will be providing all school supplies for its students in the coming school year.
In a press release on Wednesday Gillham stated that Shady Point Schools would be able to provide school supplies to all its students thanks to donations from the parents of students as well as churches, former students, and the community.
Although the stifling temperatures have somewhat
subsided compared to the previous three weeks, the
potential for heat-related illness is still high.
Since June, when the ever-increasing record breaking
heat wave began, LeFlore County EMS has
treated more than 20 patients suffering from heat
cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. No heatrelated
fatalities have been recorded in the county
according to Dave Grovdahl, Director of LeFlore
County Emergency Medical Services.

from heat-related illnesses in 2011 in Oklahoma. The

An accused murderer was informed during a court appearance Wednesday that
he is facing the death penalty if convicted. Donnie Lee Harris Jr., 29, of Talihina, is accused of the first degree murder of his girlfriend, Kristi Ferguson, who was 25 at the time of her death. Harris is accused of setting Ferguson on fire after dousing her with gasoline. The couple were inside a home in Talihina when Harris set the fire, leaving several other people endangered when the home caught fire. Ferguson succumbed to her injuries in an Oklahoma City hospital. A father never expects to bury his son, but that is
exactly what Talihina resident Jesse Williams had to do
last year when his son, Brandon, died. Adding to the tragedy
of Brandon’s death was the way he died. Brandon died
on March 23, 2011, at age 27 of a heroin overdose at his
home in Talihina.
Jesse says that from an early age, he and his son would
go hunting together and that his son loved hunting, fishing,
camping, and the outdoors.
