Jailbirds seeking bail for MDA

Some members of the Poteau area business community have been arrested today for having big hearts.
They are volunteering to be “arrested and serve time” in a mock jail at Holiday Inn Express to raise money for the local chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

CASC names scholarship recipients

More than $4.5 million approved in disaster recovery

OKLAHOMA CITY – More than $4.5 million has already been approved in federal funding for debris clearance and emergency protective measures in Oklahoma following the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding that occurred from May 18 – June 2, 2013.
Of the total, $4.1 million covers eligible debris removal costs under a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance Alternative Procedures Pilot Program. The accelerated debris removal program was initiated in Oklahoma following the devastating spring storms.

There's a new bull in town

Many have seen the two decorated bulls in town. One on the north end by the Cavanal Scenic Expressway ramp and the other on the south side of the Poteau Chamber of Commerce. Well the newest of many to come has found its home.
The Central National Bank bull was delivered Tuesday afternoon.
Delivery people said the next bull to be unveiled belongs to JoB Construction.

Talihina to hold special election

July 16, 2013

Candidates for two seats on the Talihina Board of Trustees will begin filing their declarations of candidacy at 8 a.m. Monday at the LeFlore County Election Board.
The filing period will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to Election Board Secretary Sharon Steele.
Candidates will file for a four-year term on the board and a two-year unexpired term.
The nonpartisan special municipal election will be held Sept. 10, Steele said.

Man critically injured in head on collision

July 16, 2013

A Pocola man was critically injured after a semi slammed head on onto his vehicle Tuesday morning.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Alvin Jamerson, 32, of Millerton was driving a 1995 Peterbilt tractor trailer hauling a load of cattle east on U.S. highway 270 west of Wister when he told police he fell asleep. Jamerson's semi crossed the center line striking a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Randy Don Woodard, 59, of Pocola.

CNB warns of flamingo flocks invading Poteau tonight

Don't call the cops just yet, that isn't a prowler it's the pink flamingo flockers and you have just been flocked.
If you wake up and look out your window to find you are now the proud caretaker of a flock of flamingo's who have found their way into your yard, it isn't vandalism, it's a fundraiser for a good cause.
Employees with Central National Bank's north branch are raising proceeds for the LeFlore County Relay of Life cancer event to be held Sept. 7.

Prescribed burn area east of Haw Creek

July 15, 2013

National forest fire managers began a prescribed burn Saturday in the Walker Mountain area in Scott County, Ark., in the Ouachita National Forests.
About 212 acres are affected.
A prescribed fire is one is ignited by trained fire personnel under specified fuel and weather conditions to achieve specific resource objectives.
