MUSKOGEE – DATE- Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-2) will host a Congressional Service Academy information session for Second District students interested in applying to one of the nation’s service academies.
“This is a chance for students, parents and school counselors to come and get the information they need on the service academies and the types of candidates they are looking for,” said Mullin. “We have some very talented and bright students in the Second District and I hope they will take advantage of this opportunity.”
Learn organic methods for building soil fertility at a Kerr Center workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 27, from 9-5, at center headquarters.Â
Registration, due by April 22, costs $35 and includes lunch. Space is limited.Â

The Spiro Mounds Site is one of the most important archeological discoveries in North America and Oklahoma’s only state archeological park. Spiro is the westernmost site of a complex cultural tradition in the Southeast called the Southern Cult or Southeastern Ceremonial Complex. The site, occupied from AD 850 to 1450, was home to powerful leaders who directed the building of the nine platform and burial mounds on the 80-acre site. These leaders governed farmers in outlying villages who probably provided labor for mound-building.

Consider joining the sixth annual Cavanal Killer 5-mile Walk-Run.
The walk/run will be Saturday, May 11. Registration for runners will begin at 7:30 a.m. and registration for walkers will start at 8:30 a.m. at Poteau Elementary School. Those running in the Killer will leave the school at 8:15 a.m.; walkers will leave at 9:30 a.m. The race will end at the pavilion atop Cavanal Hill
Shelby Smith, a seveth-grade student from Heavener Elementary School qualified for the State Geography Bee — the only student from LeFlore County to do so. The bee was held on April 5 at the University of Oklahoma Campus in Norman. Shelby's parents are April and Cody Smith. Â
Sabrina Dyer has been named 2013 Â Heavener Elementary Teacher of the Year.
She is married to Jeremy and they have two sons, Sean, 9, and Johathan, 6.
Dyer taught fourth grade in Killeen, Texas, for two years and fourth grade at Bokoshe for three years.
She also worked on the High School Yearbook and was Junior High and High School Cheerleading sponsor at Bokoshe.
Dyer has been at Heavener for six years teaching math and music. Â She also is the Junior High Student Council sponsor and coaches fifth and sixth grade academic team.

Honobia Senior Citizens Center is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to providing nutritious lunches for persons in this area five days per week. In order to continue to provide this service, we must rely on fundraising projects. These include playing bingo on the first Thursday of each month and a 5K Big Foot Run annually. A snack bar is available at these events. Occasionally, we have pie auctions and other special events. We invite you to come and join us.

On July 1, 2011, the Heavener Runestone Park ceased to be a state-run park and became a privatized recreational area managed by the Friends of the Heavener Runestone Park and Historical Site.
The Friends of the Heavener Runestone Park and Historical Site is a group of LeFlore County residents who have joined forces with the city of Heavener to save the park from closure and ensure its continued operation. The group works closely with and seeks advice from the Oklahoma Department of Tourism, maintaining an excellent working relationship.

Artifacts of the past have found a new home with the opening of the LeFlore County Museum located on Dewey Street in Poteau.
The museum is located in the Hotel Lowrey building, which itself is a historical marker in Poteau. The museum opened its first exhibit on Veterans Day by displaying war memorabilia from several decades in the Lowrey lobby.
