Road closure for city repair

June 24, 2014

Parker Street is temporarily closed today [June 24] east of the Harper Street intersection while city workers complete repairs to utility lines.

The polls are open; Don't forget to vote

Local polling places are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today [June 24].
Local races include LeFlore County Assessor and District 3 County Commissioner. All candidates in the local races are Democrat.
If no candidate gains a majority of the votes, a runoff will be be held Aug. 26.
Other races will decide Democratic and Republican nominees for the Nov. 4 general election, unless runoffs are needed.
Democrats will vote in three races besides the two county contests:
• U.S. representative District 2 — Earl E. Everet and Joshua Harris-Till.

Wister man faces string of drug-related charges

June 23, 2014

Bail was denied Monday for a Wister man accused of committing a string of drug-related crimes Saturday.
Gary E. Henderson, 36, was jailed in LeFlore County for attempting to elude an officer, two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, two counts of resisting arrest, tampering with evidence, possession of body armor, driving under the influence as well as more alleged criminal acts.

Candidates, voters prepare for upcoming election

Early voting in Oklahoma’s statewide primary election closed Saturday [June 21] and candidates are ramping up their campaigns in preparation of tomorrow's [June 24] day at the polls.
Polling places throughout the county will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
LeFlore County Democrats will vote in at least four races — county assessor, state superintendent of public instruction, U.S. senator (to fill Tom Coburn’s unexpired term), and District 2 U.S. representative. In parts of the county, Democrats also will vote for District 3 county commissioner and District 1 state representative.

2 injured in weekend accident

Two men were injured at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning after the car they were in left the road and struck the Santa Fe Trail Rail Road.
The accident happened at the Kerr Mansion and old U.S. Highway 271 intersection near Poteau.
The driver was thrown from the car and flown by medical helicopter to an Arkansas hospital.
The passenger also was injured and was taken by LeFlore County EMS to a Fort Smith, Ark., hospital.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol investigated the accident.

LeFlore County under significant weather advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a significant weather advisory [ 3 p.m. June 20] for LeFlore County. Strong storms will affect the area until 3:30 p.m.
The storms will be capable of producing strong wind gusts and dime size hail

Convicted murderer returns to court

June 20, 2014

Christopher Kenyon Simpson, convicted of the 2013 Easter Sunday double slaying of 20-year-old Ka'Loni Flynn and her unborn child.
Flynn was found shot to death in her car on McGinnis Lane near Spiro.
Simpson's court appearance today [June 20] at 1:30 p.m. in the LeFlore County Courthouse is in regard to his appeal at the state level.
Simpson was convicted in October and given two life sentences in November.

The Oklahoma Blood Institute will hold a blood drive Friday, June 20, at Walmart in Poteau.
You can donate from 1-4:30 p.m.

Adult Learning Center celebrates graduation

June 19, 2014

Tara Engetschwiler was one of 53 students to accept their GED during graduation ceremonies Tuesday [June 17] night at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center.
The students completed their studies at the Adult Learning Center in Poteau.
