EOMC facing penalties

Beginning Oct. 1, Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center will be one of 2,225 hospitals nationwide to be penalized by the Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services as part of the Affordable Care Act program targeting hospital readmission rates, according to CMS.
“Thirty-day readmissions have been a problem identified by CMS for a hospital performance improvement,” said EOMC CEO Mike Carter. “It was estimated that one in five Medicare beneficiaries were readmitted within 30 days of the initial admission and discharge.”

Talihina man injured in accident

A Talihina man was flown by medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital after a two-car accident Friday.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Daniel Holland, 63, was driving a 2003 Ford pickup south on County Road 1130 south of Talihina at about 1:30 p.m. when the accident occurred.
Trooper Ryan Williams reported Jordan Barnes, 18, of Talihina was driving a 2001 Chevrolet east on a county road when he failed to stop for a stop sign, colliding with the side of Holland's pickup.

Panama man hospitalized after fight

One man was jailed, another hospitalized after a fight broke out in Panama Friday night.
According to Panama police officer Mark Jiminez, he responded to the call of an altercation between two men at a home on the corner of Broadway and McCurtain Streets after 11 p.m. Jiminez said two men at the home had been drinking alcoholic beverages when one man later identified as Saul Silos, 43, allegedly got angry. According to Jiminez, Saul Silos, used a knife to cut the other man across his chest.

Wister Chief's resignation results in special meeting

The town of Wister soon may have a new chief of police after Randy Liles announced his plans to return to work for LeFlore County.
Liles, who has held the chief's for more than three years, will conclude his time as a municipal officer on Aug. 14. Liles said he will begin working as a deputy for the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department the next day.
With the announcement, the Wister Board of Trustees has called for a special meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday to discuss filling the vacant position.

Emergency crews kept busy Friday

August 9, 2013

LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services and the Poteau Fire Department responded to the emergency call of a 53-year-old man who was injured when he fell off a ladder at a home on Cavanal, according to dispatch information.
Emergency responders said a landing zone was set up for the arrival of a Tulsa Life Flight medical helicopter that took the man to a Tulsa hospital to be treated for fractures to his legs.

Passenger of wrecked car jailed

August 9, 2013

Poteau police responded to the call of a car on its side in a deep ditch on Harper Street near the Page Street intersection Friday about 4 p.m. According to radio communications, the driver of the car fled the scene and police began a search of the area. The driver was not located.
According to officers, it appeared the car struck a low water bridge then landed on its side in the ditch. Police said the passenger, Travis Armstrong, 33, was arrested for public intoxication and taken to the LeFlore County Detention Center.
Officer Cody Johnson investigated the accident.

Severe storms cause damage in county

Strong storms blew through the northern portion of LeFlore County Thursday evening leaving downed trees and power lines in their wake.
At about 6 p.m., the National Weather Service warned towns north of Poteau to prepare for severe thunderstorms. Not long after, several residents in Panama and Poteau found themselves without electricity.
"The 911 center relied on backup generators all night," said Emergency Management Director Michael Davidson.
According to police, about 150 people were without electricity in Panama and an unknown number in Poteau.

Arrest made in Neff murder

August 8, 2013

An arrest has been made in connection with the more than four-year-old murder of Joe Neff.
According to jail records, Raymond Larry Nichols, 60, of Cameron is being held in the LeFlore County Detention Center for murder but the District Attorney's Office has not yet confirmed his charged is in connection with the murder of Long Branch Saloon owner Joe Neff. Neff's body was found in a body of water near Pocola days after his disappearance from his business in 2009.

UPDATE: Missing Man found alive

August 8, 2013

Harlan McCage has been found is being treated by EMS workers on the scene. He was found a little while ago near the Panama sewer ponds.
Authorities in LeFlore County were searching for 52-year-old McCage, who is blind and has numerous health problems including diabetes. He wondered off yesterday around 1 p.m.
More information will be released shortly.
