Give the gift of blood at CASC

Carl Albert State College is starting off the new year by saving lives through blood donation with Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI). Most healthy adults 16 and older are encouraged to donate blood Tuesday, Jan. 7, in the ballroom from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

'Operation Predator' a multi-agency success

OKLAHOMA CITY — The recent sentencing of an eastern Oklahoma man for producing child pornography is an example of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's cooperation with international law enforcement agencies, according to ICE's resident agent in charge in Oklahoma.
David Anthony Baker, 35, of Howe was sentenced Dec. 19 to 39 years in prison after he pleaded guilty in July to charges of producing child pornography and to producing child pornography as a registered sex offender, said Paul Steenson, ICE's resident agent in charge in Oklahoma.

Burel and Sue Lovell had their 2012 Yamaha Rhino stolen overnight Jan. 2 and they want it back.
The Farm Bureau Insurance Agency is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for taking the camouflage-painted Rhino from the Lovell's property. The couple lives in McCurtain.

Arson suspected in police department fire

Arson is suspected in a fire that damaged a small part of the Rock Island Police Department Sunday evening.
According to Oklahoma Fire Marshal Investigator Tony Rust, it appears an ignitable fluid was splashed on the northeast corner of the building. Rust said a passerby noticed the fire and notified authorities.
The Hogeye Fire Department responded to the fire but according to first responders, the fire had gone out before their arrival.
The building, which is constructed out of metal, sustained about $2,500 in damage, according to Rust.

Blood drives set this week, next

The need for blood doesn’t take a holiday. That’s why Oklahoma Blood Institute urges area residents to give this holiday week.
Poteau Chamber of Commerce will host a blood drive from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, at the chamber offices. Appointments are not required but can be made by calling (877) 340-8777 or visiting obi.org.

Deadline nears in Shady Point special election

Time is getting short for Shady Point voters who wish to cast their ballot by absentee.
According to LeFlore County Election Board Secretary Sharon Steele, the ballots must be received by the election board no later than 7 p.m on Jan. 14. Due to time restrictions and mail service, the applications to get an absentee ballot is Jan. 8 at 5 p.m.
The special election will be held Jan. 14 and voters will decide who will fill the one-year unexpired trustee term. Candidates who cast their name into the race for the town position include Henry Wells and Leroy Smith.

Housefire on Old 112 under investigation

A chimney was all that was left marking the remains of a house that burned to the ground early Sunday.
According to Poteau Fire Chief Jon Pickel, firefighters received a call at 12:37 a.m. about a house on fire about one and one-half miles past the old Poteau River bridge on old Oklahoma Highway 112 near the Fairview community.
Pickel said when firemen arrived the home, previously occupied by Dave W. “Zach” Cook, was engulfed in flames and was not able to be saved.

Half marathon joins Vike Hike

The annual Carl Albert State College Vike Hike 5K has a new component this year — a half marathon has been added to the event.
Both races are set for Saturday, March 29, in Poteau. 
Hali Repass, one of the event organizers, said both courses are USATF certified. The half will travel along the Poteau Scenic Bypass, with northbound lanes shut down to all traffic, then follow the traditional Vike Hike 5K course. Maps for both courses are on MapMyRun.com and at vikehike.carlalbert.edu.

Governor bans e-cigarettes from state property

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gov. Mary Fallin issued an executive order on Monday that bans the use of electronic cigarettes and vapor devices on state property, saying the potential long-term health effects of the products are unknown.
The order applies to all land and property owned or leased by the state, including state vehicles, effective Jan. 1. The only exception is for residents of state residential facilities for veterans.
E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid nicotine solution and create a water vapor that users inhale.

Jury doles death to Talihina man

Twelve jurors recommended death Wednesday evening for Donnie Lee Harris Jr. for the murder by fire of 24-year-old Kristi Ferguson.
Harris was convicted Tuesday of Ferguson's murder after a two-hour deliberation period and the death penalty phase of the trial began immediately. After a day and a half of testimony from Ferguson's and Harris' family in regard to the impact of the murder on them, the jury deliberated for a few hours before returning a recommendation of death for Harris.
