Two detained in alleged school threats

May 1, 2014

At about 8:30 a.m. May 1 the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department responded to a threat made against the Leflore Public Schools, according to dispatch information.
Sheriff's Deputies, Choctaw National Tribal Officers and Oklahoma Highway Patrol arrived at the school and at about 8:50 a.m. gave the all clear after determining staff and students were not harmed.
According to the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department website, two people have been detained for questioning in connection with the undisclosed threat.

Poteau street closed for water line replacement

May 1, 2014

Coggins Avenue between Broadway and Central Street will be closed to through traffic for four to five days, beginning May 1 while city workers replace a water line.

Spiro benefit fishing tournament sees young turnout

May 1, 2014

The Spiro Fire Department hosted a benefit fishing tournament Saturday [April 26]. Kade Christensen and Jake Odom pose with the Youngest Fishermen winner Cooper Carter who received a plaque for his participation.
The proceeds raised from the benefit assist the fire department in participating in charitable events such as the annual Angel tree.

NWS declares F1 tornado hit LeFlore County

April 30, 2014

Damage left in Octavia after storms rocked LeFlore County Sunday night has been declared the results of a tornado.
On Monday representatives of the National Weather Service surveyed the damage reported in the Ouachita forest near Octavia. On Tuesday the NWS released information that an EF1 tornado was the culprit that left broken, twisted trees and downed a power line.

Poteau Chamber CEO receives 4-state award

Poteau Chamber of Commerce CEO Karen Wages was honored today [April 29] by chamber executives, directors and members from a four-state area during the annual Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma Regional Convention hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce Executive and held in Branson, Mo.
She was honored by being the first recipient of the Karen Wages MAKO Leadership Scholarship Award, what will be an annual award to chamber and executive directors in the 4-state area.

Area Republicans to hold monthly meeting

April 28, 2014

The Leflore County Republicans will hold their monthly meeting on today [April 28] at the Patrick Lynch Public Library in Poteau. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Congressman Mullin's wife, Christie, will be on hand to speak. Also State Representative candidate Traci Barnes will speak to the group. All Republicans and Conservatives are invited to attend.

Storms leave damage, cause power outages

April 28, 2014

Sunday evening storms left damage in their wake and hundreds without power in Poteau.
Reported damages include the Tower Drive-in loosing its roof, cars and homes damaged by toppled trees and several utility poles downed near the Choctaw Country Club.
OG&E still is working [April 28 9:45 a.m.] to restore power to hundreds in Poteau who have been in the dark since about 10 p.m. Sunday evening.
