Home and Community Education event hosted at PCC

July 15, 2013

LeFlore County will host a four-county Oklahoma Home and Community Education international lesson on Greece.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, at Poteau Church of Christ, Oklahoma Highway 112 North.
The menu will include hummus with pita bread, gyros, Greek salad and baklava.
Registration is $5 at the door, Chapters should notify LeFlore OHCE of expected total attendance by Aug. 13.

Cox wins Choctaw Election

Delton Cox will remain the Choctaw Nation Councilman for District 4 for the next four years.
According to Saturday's election results, Incumbent Cox defeated his opponent, Richard Box 572 votes to 145. Cox took 79 percent of the votes.
In the District 9 race, Ted Garry Dosh beat Berdie Mae Williams, 1262-1018, winning by 11 percent.

Virginia court upholds Oklahoma argument

OKLAHOMA CITY – A decision this week by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals backs Oklahoma’s argument in the state’s health care case that it has the right to sue the federal government over the law’s large employer mandate.
The Virginia case involved whether Liberty University had “standing” to sue the federal government over the health care mandate and whether the Anti-Injunction Act applied to the case. The State of Oklahoma has argued the same issues in federal court in its lawsuit against an IRS rule that goes outside of the law.

Choctaw Nation gifts Salvation Army

A gift of $50,000 was presented to the Salvation Army from the Choctaw Nation to assist with ongoing relief efforts for victims of the tornados that ravaged the central Oklahoma area this Spring. The money was raised through a week of fuel sales and donations at the Choctaw Travel Plazas in southeast Oklahoma. Profits for that designated week’s gas sales were allocated for the disaster relief.   

Magic Archeologist a hit at Buckley

The Magic Archeologist visited Buckley Public Library Wednesday and showed the many surprises he had dug up in his explorations. In the afternoon Steve Crawford shared many sleight of hand actions with the teen Summer Reading Program participants. Buckley Summer Reading Programs are sponsored by Southeast Public Library System of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, Institute of Museum and Library Studies and local sponsors. Programs will continue until July 31.

UPDATE: Silver Alert canceled

The Woodward County Sheriff's Office has canceled a Silver Alert for Debra Bishop, 57. Bishop was last seen on the Fourth of July at about 7:30 a.m. leaving Durant, Okla., to head home to Woodward and has not been seen or heard from since.
Bishop has been located.

County recovers stolen property from strip pit

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department and Panama Police were at a strip pit on Blue Goose Road near Bokoshe Thursday recovering stolen property that had been submerged in the water.
The property was found by a father and son fishing duo.
Undersheriff Kendall Morgan returned a stolen Polaris Razor to Panama while Panama Chief of Police John Whiteaker remained at the location searching for further stolen property.

Two-car accident stops Poteau traffic

Traffic was temporarily delayed Thursday afternoon after a two-car accident on the bypass at the Pleasant Valley intersection.
First responders said no one was injured in the accident.
Poteau Fire and Police along with LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services responded to the crash.
Police are still investigating.

Silver Alert issued for missing woman

The Woodward County Sheriff's Office has issued a Silver Alert for Debra Bishop, 57. Bishop was last seen on the Fourth of July at about 7:30 a.m. leaving Durant, Okla., to head home to Woodward and has not been seen or heard from since.
Bishop is a white female last seen driving a 2011 White Kia with Oklahoma tags.
If you come into contact with Bishop or have information about her whereabouts contact your local law enforcement agency.

Woman injured in interstate crash

July 11, 2013

A two-car accident injured one near Checotah. Oklahoma Highway Patrols said the accident happened at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 40 eastbound on ramp from U.S Highway 69, about 2 miles southwest of Checotah in McIntosh County.
