Caden Place is the two-year-old of Jarrod and Rachel Place of Heavener. On January 30 he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He is now at St Francis receiving treatment. First Baptist Church in Heavener is hosting a Indian Taco dinner on March 4 to help with the expenses. On April 14 the Heavener Fire Department with the help of the Heavener and Poteau Masonic Lodges are putting on their fourth Annual Heavener Benefit Texas Hold'em Tournament. This year the proceeds from that event will be used to help the Place family.
Traci Barnes and other members of the Poteau Area Business Association (PABA) will be on hand tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Buckley Public Library to speak about the upcoming special election on the proposed hotel tax in Poteau. The party has also invited anyone wishing to speak in favor of the tax to come to the meeting as well.
Trial for Aaron Hinson began Tuesday morning at 9 A.m. Seven woman and five men were chosen to decide Hinson's fate. The trial began with jury members listening closely to what their responsibilities and requirements are as a juror. After instructions were given opening statements were presented by both Margaret Nicholson, Assistant District Attorney prosecuting in the case and Peter Ashor, defense attorney for Hinson. Nicholson began telling the jurors what evidence she would be presenting and how she is convinced that Hinson was guilty of murdering his girlfriends three-month-old son.
The annual banquet for the LeFlore County Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will be on March 8. Doors open at 5:30. The NWTF banquets is open to the public and it is an exciting event for all. The banquet allows people of all ages to get access to exclusive merchandise and help raise funds for wild turkey conservation and important programs that introduce the outdoors to women and children. The NWTF is a national non-profit organization that works towards the conservation of the wild turkey.
Jury selection begun in trail against Aaron Ray Wesley Hinson today in LeFlore County District Court. Opening arguments should begin on Tuesday.
Hinson was charged in 2009 with the murder of an infant child after the child succumbed to injuries received while in Hinson's care.
According to the affidavit, Hinson is accused of causing a skull fracture and bruises to his girlfriend's infant son. Hinson and the infant's mother were both charged with the Child's death.
Whitesboro High School student Tiffany Worrell has selected to represent Oklahoma as a delegate to the 2012 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University.
Worrell will join a select group of 250 students from across the country to participate in an intensive, week-long study of leadership in environmental science and conservation.
Tonight is the 93rd annual Poteau Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. In addition to the banquet, the chamber will also be celebrating it's 100th year of operation. With more than 650 guests attending, this year's banquet promises to be the grandest yet for the Poteau chamber.
The event is being held in the newly completed Don W. Reynolds Center in Poteau and will see the presentation of the Man and Woman of the Year awards. There will also be a silent and live auction and the highly anticipated Ms. Centennial pageant.
A Talihina woman is recovering in an Oklahoma City Hospital after being set on fire by her boyfriend Saturday night.
Donnie L. Harris Jr., 29, of Talihina, was arrested for first degree arson on Sunday after an investigation by Oklahoma State Fire Marshal Investigator Tony Rust.
According to Rust, Harris, along with his girlfriend, three other adults and a child had been inside the home when the incident occurred. Rust stated in a phone interview that Harris had used an ignitable substance to set his girlfriend on fire which subsequently caused a house fire.
