Afternoon accident causes traffic jam

February 26, 2013

According to the Poteau Police Department, a gold minivan was attempting to cross South Broadway from Conser Street when it collided with a white SUV traveling south on Broadway.
The collision caused the white SUV to spin around and turn over, coming to rest on it's top.
No one was injured in the accident.
Traffic was detoured onto South McKenna and Church Street during the investigation and removal of the damaged vehicles.

Spiro mounds hosts vernal equinox walks

Wonder about the importance of spring to Native Americans?
Come celebrate the beginning of spring a little differently this year. On March 20 and 21, there will be a series of guided vernal equinox walks at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center, where you can learn from an archaeologist and ask questions.

Alleged coon-dog killer collared

“This is one of the worst cases I have worked in which hunting dogs were killed for no reason,” said Lt. Donnie Edwards of the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department.
Edwards' statement was made after a Poteau man allegedly opened fire, killing two hounds trained to track raccoon. A third coon dog was injured in the shooting.
Douglas Slade Frerich, 42, of Poteau was booked into the LeFlore County Detention Center on three counts of felony animal cruelty after the Friday night shooting.

Reichert Fire Department holds annual fundraiser

February 25, 2013

The Reichert Fire Department will hold its annual chili supper fundraiser starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at the Reichert Fire Station and Community Center.
The price per meal is $5 for adults, $3 for children under 12.
The Walker Mountain Boys will provide music for the event.
All proceeds go to support the Reichert Fire Department.

Leadership LeFlore County application deadline toay

Today is the last day for applications for the Leadership LeFlore County class of 2013. The course is designed for education future leaders in LeFlore County and surrounding areas. Classes begin March 7 at 6 p.m. at Long Lake Resort. 
The first session covers meaning of leadership and leadership skill and styles. Guest speakers will be Poteau Mayor Jeff Shockley, State Rep. James Lockhart and former Sen. Kenneth Corn.
Registration coast $50 and each attendee will receive an LLC shirt, meals and transportation special tours.

Emergency crews respond to single vehicle accident in Poteau

February 21, 2013

One person received minor injuries in a one vehicle accident in Poteau Thursday afternoon.
Police and Emergency Medical Services responded to the call of a one vehicle accident on Waddle Street behind the Choctaw Travel Plaza.
The cause of the accident was under investigation.

Johnathen Thacker bound over for arraignment in murder case

February 21, 2013

Johnathen Don James Edward Thacker, 23, of Fort Smith, Ark., appeared in front of Special Judge Jeff Singer today for preliminary hearing for first degree murder.
Thacker is accused of taking part in the murder of Braina Ault on Sept.12, 2010. Ault was 22-years-old at the time of her death.
Thacker and his brother, Elvis Thacker, have been charged with first degree murder and forcible sodomy in connection with Ault's death.

Parents of Autism meeting canceled

February 21, 2013

The Parents of Autism meeting scheduled for tonight at Carl Albert State College in Poteau has been canceled.
Kodey Toney, a representative of the group, said the club will reschedule the Partners in Policymaking program.

Winter weather may delay newspaper delivery

February 20, 2013

In case of icy road conditions, Poteau Daily News carriers will attempt to deliver to subscribers. However, we do not ask our carriers to risk wrecking their vehicles and getting stranded in freezing temperatures.

If they can safely get down a subscriber's road, they will deliver the paper. If not, we ask that subscribers be patient. We will get the paper delivered as soon as possible.

Area schools close early due to winter weather

February 20, 2013

Several area schools closed early today due to winter weather making travel hazardous.
Pocola Schools closed at 11:30 a.m.
Panama Schools are not closing early but will be closed Thursday
Wister Schools are closing at 1 p.m.
Shady Point Schools are closing at 12:15 p.m.
Other schools within the county are allowing parents to pick up children early but are not closing due to children who may not have someone at their home.
