Poteau Valley Improvement Authority meeting Tuesday

The Poteau Valley Improvement Authority will hold their regular meeting Tuesday, June 2 at Poteau City Hall.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Agenda items include the following:

1. Read and approve minutes of the regular May 5 meeting.

2. Discussion and action on finance committee report
a) approval of monthly claims.
b) budget committee recommendation for FY 15-16 budget.

3. Discussion and action on FY 15-16 budget.

4. Manager's report.

5. Update on aeration equipment for Poteau tower.

6. Update on water shed.
a.) update on the Quarry Island Cove alum project.

Coach's resignation on Talihina School agenda

June 1, 2015

Talihina School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. tonight [June 1] at the Board of Education Building on Isherwood Street.
Items to be discussed include Superintendent's Report, regular business and the resignation of the Junior High Boys Coach.

Tulsa Health Department detects West Nile virus mosquitoes

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Officials with the Tulsa Health Department say a sampling of mosquitoes from Tulsa County has tested positive for West Nile virus.

The months of July through October are typically the highest risk months for exposure to West Nile in Oklahoma, but the Health Department begins a mosquito surveillance program each May. And although there have been no confirmed cases of West Nile in humans, officials say it's important for residents to take precautions against the potentially deadly virus.

Volunteers needed in clean up of Kerr Mansion

Friends of the Kerr Mansion are seeking volunteers to help Saturday [May 30] in clean up of the grounds after an EF2 tornado touched down Monday.

NWS confirms Poteau tornado

The National Weather Service in Tulsa has confirmed that an EF-2 tornado struck Poteau over Memorial Day.

The confirmed tornado caused widespread damage in the area, with trees down throughout the city and surrounding towns, falling into and on top of homes, debris scattered and homes destroyed.

LeFlore County isn't expected to receive a break from storms as more are projected today, May 28, and over the next several days.

There are thunderstorm potentials in the forecast every day into next Wednesday, with severe thunderstorm potential this Friday.

Sallisaw man identified as victim in South Dakota park crash

WALL, S.D. (AP) — Authorities have identified an Oklahoma man killed in a one-vehicle crash in Badlands National Park in South Dakota.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says 51-year-old Richard Vasquez of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, was killed in the crash Saturday afternoon.

According to the Highway Patrol, the pickup driven by Vasquez went off state Highway 240 and down a steep embankment, rolling twice.

The patrol says Vasquez was thrown from the pickup and died at the scene.

An investigation is ongoing.

Voluntary evacuations in Wister

According to LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale, the residents of about 50 homes near Caston Creek and in the Ward and Pocohantas areas near Wister Lake are being asked to evacuate [May 25 at 1 p.m.].
Seale said the evacuations are voluntary and are being requested before a potential of another 3 inches of rain arrive this evening. Seale said residents who don't leave could be stranded for up to four days.

Floods, storms chances continue all week

Flash floods will again be possible today, Monday, May 25 - and a few tornadoes haven't been ruled out.

The National Weather Service in Tulsa said we have an elevated risk for tornadoes this afternoon and into tonight as severe thunderstorms move back into the area.

Showers and storms have started to develop across West-Central Texas this morning and will track into southeastern Oklahoma this afternoon and spread into northwest Arkansas by late afternoon.
