Poteau police investigate two car accident

Poteau police officers investigate a two-car accident Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. along the Cavanal Scenic Expressway. According to emergency responders no one was injured.

Poteau Fire Department responds to house fire

August 5, 2013

Poteau Fire Department responded to a house fire Saturday at about 5 p.m. on Parker Street. The fire appeared to have started on the outside of the building and according to fire personnel, the cause is undetermined.

Area business hosts Senior Appreciation Day

August 5, 2013

LeFlore County senior citizens will be honored at the Annual Senior Appreciation Day on Aug. 21.
Activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Strike-a-Lot Lanes, 1914 N. Broadway.
Festivities will include door prizes, free lunch and bingo.
Every senior citizen will receive one free game of bowling and shoe rental.
Sponsors and exhibitors will have information on a variety of health and informational services as part of the festivities.

Howe man charged in alleged assault on officer

August 5, 2013

A man jailed in June for burglary is facing new charges after he allegedly struck another inmate and a detention officer.
Cody Linder Riley, 19, of Howe, was charged by the LeFlore County District Attorney's Office on Friday with assault and battery on a detention officer and a second charge of assault and battery stemming from an incident on July 18.
According to the affidavit, detention officer Kevin Knight heard a noise coming from a holding cell and when he went to investigate he saw Riley kicking another inmate who was lying on his bed in his side.

Area business women learn self defense during Bizz conference

August 2, 2013

During the seventh annual Women's Business Conference held Friday at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center in Poteau about 30 women learned about safety. Poteau police Lt. Gregg Russell spoke about safety while Poteau School Resource Officer Donnie Williams demonstrated self-defense. The women practiced the tactics during the demonstration.

Area soldier promoted to Major

Air Force Maj. Trevor L. Williams has been promoted to the rank of major in the U.S. Air Force.
Williams is a C-17A pilot assigned to the 437th Airlift Wing at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C.  The new major has served in the military for nine years. 
He is the son of Teresa Williams of Rock Island Road, Cameron, Okla. His wife, Brianna, is the daughter of Randy and Sherree Coulson of Independence Circle, Texarkana, Texas.

Spiro man completes U.S. Naval basic training

Navy Airman Apprentice Branden X. Kinkade, son of Stephanie L. and Travis L. Kinkade of Spiro, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. 
During the eight-week program, Kinkade completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. 

Area church hosts "Back to School" bash

The Poteau First United Methodist Church, located at 109 S. Harper, is hosting an "End of Summer / Back to School Bash" on Sunday, Aug. 11 from 5 to 7:30 p.m.  
There will be free hamburgers, games, free goody bags, and free haircuts, vision screenings, and dental screenings for school-age children.  The free services and goody bags will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
There will also be a free drawing for a boy's and girl's backpack for two of the children present, each filled with school supplies.
Please come join us in celebrating the end of summer. Everyone is welcome!

Chorale auditions open this weekend

If you love music and are willing to work to perform with others, Cavanal Chorale is opening its doors for you this weekend.
Cavanal Chorale was organized in 2008 for the purpose of sharing choral music of high musical standards with Poteau and the surrounding areas, according to Chorale Conductor Noma Curtis.
"A variety of genres are rehearsed and presented in each themed concert series. These genres include classical, art songs, folk songs, musical theatre, sacred, humorous and patriotic," Curtis said.
