Woman injured in interstate crash

July 11, 2013

A two-car accident injured one near Checotah. Oklahoma Highway Patrols said the accident happened at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 40 eastbound on ramp from U.S Highway 69, about 2 miles southwest of Checotah in McIntosh County.

Askins to speak at First Friday lunch

Poteau Chamber of Commerce will welcome Jari Askins as its keynote speaker Friday.

Askins will speak about Oklahoma’s Peggy and Charles Stephenson Cancer Center on the Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Campus in Oklahoma City. 

Softball fundraiser for World Series trip

The Pirates softball team will have a hamburger meal fundraiser from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 18 in front of Costner Stadium in the northeast corner of the parking lot by the signal light at Stadium Drive. Hamburger/cheeseburger baskets cost $6, and orders may be placed by calling (918) 647-1694. Orders can be delivered if need be. All proceeds will help fund the team's trip to the World Series, which will be July 19-21 in Shawnee.

School board presented plan for new high school

Preliminary plans for a new high school and a $21.575 million bond issue to pay for it were presented at Monday's meeting of the Poteau Board of Education.
Superintendent Don Sjoberg said the plans are "about 80 percent complete," and he plans to have a firm proposal to present for the board's approval in August.
Poteau architect Michael Riley showed drawings of the proposed structure, saying the plans would accommodate future expansion and were designed for low and easy maintenance.

Fout named assistant vice president

Arvest Bank is pleased to announce the promotion of Sherry Fout to assistant vice president. Fout has been with Arvest for more than 12 years and serves as consumer loan officer at the Poteau branch. She recently received the Sales and Service Award for top consumer loan officer of the Fort Smith region for 2012. Sherry also serves on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of LeFlore County, is involved with the Fort Smith Home Show and the Fort Smith Blues Society Music Festival.

Police fatally shoot Poteau man at Pa. home

SEWICKLEY, Pa. (AP) — An Oklahoma man was fatally shot by police responding to a burglar alarm at a home in an upscale Pittsburgh suburb. The man had periodically stayed at the home before a court ordered him to stay away after he allegedly threatened the woman who lived there.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identified the dead man as Robert Brooks, 27, of Poteau, Okla. An autopsy scheduled Tuesday was expected to confirm that he died from being shot when Sewickley police answered the alarm Monday about 9:30 p.m.

Police say driver crossed center line; caused 3-car accident

The cause of a three-car accident in Poteau on July 3, has been released by the Poteau Police Department.
According to the accident report, Corey D. Cooper, 25, of Cameron, crossed the center line on north Broadway, striking another vehicle head-on. Cooper, who was traveling south on Broadway in a 2001 Black Ford pickup near the EZ Mart crashed into a 1995 Green GMC pickup driven by Gregory G. Allison, 44, of Poteau, according to the report.

Drug raid nets five

Five people were arrested in connection with a narcotics search warrant served Friday.
Jerry D. Ray II, 26; Donna Ray, 42; Eythel Buckner, 53; Ashlie R. Nelson, 28 and Shandee Albert 25, all of Wister, were booked into the LeFlore County Detention Center on multiple drug charges after a narcotics search warrant was served at a home on Pearl Street in Wister.

Poteau man escapes injury in rollover accident

July 8, 2013

Ryan Adams, 27, of Poteau, escaped serious injury Monday after a cliff-hanging blowout. Adams was headed north on the bypass near Polk Creek Road when a tire on the trailer he was towing deflated. The blowout caused the 2010 Chevy pickup to swerve to the right then roll over atop the guardrail, according to Poteau Police who investigated the accident. The trailer saved Adams pickup from going over the guardrail and rolling down a steep hill.
