Jury doles death to Talihina man

December 19, 2013

Twelve jurors recommended death Wednesday evening for Donnie Lee Harris Jr. for the murder by fire of 24-year-old Kristi Ferguson.
Harris was convicted Tuesday of Ferguson's murder after a two-hour deliberation period and the death penalty phase of the trial began immediately. After a day and a half of testimony from Ferguson's and Harris' family in regard to the impact of the murder on them, the jury deliberated for a few hours before returning a recommendation of death for Harris.

LeFlore County soldier killed in military helicopter crash

The Blackhawk helicopter that crashed in Afghanistan killing six U.S. soldiers Tuesday was piloted by a LeFlore County native.
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Randy L. Billings, 34, and five other soldiers died when their Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk crashed Tuesday in Now Bahar in southern Afghanistan while serving with NATO forces. The Pentagon said the crash remained under investigation.
Billings' Facebook page listed his hometown as Poteau and said he had attended high school in Heavener.
Billings was married and has family living in Heavener.

Donnie L. Harris found guilty in death of Kristi Ferguson

A LeFlore County jury today found Donnie L. Harris guilty of first-degree murder in the February 2012 death of 24-year-old Kristi Ferguson.
Harris was accused of splashing Ferguson with gasoline and setting her on fire. She died about a month later in a Tulsa hospital from her injuries.

Post storm damage assessment conducted by Forestry

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Ouachita and Ozark-St. Francis National Forests officials are assessing damage caused by an ice storm last week and the ongoing freezing temperatures in Arkansas and Oklahoma.
The broad band of ice caused damage stretching from northern and central parts of Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma. 
Forest personnel are assessing roads, timber and recreation areas for damage. Assessing the damage will take time because ice-packed roads remain hazardous for travel.

PFS hosts 'Rooms for Rent'

Tonight will be the final performance of Poteau First Assembly's "Our Family Christmas: Rooms for Rent," an original tragicomedy written especially for the holiday season.
"Our Family Christmas: Rooms for Rent," is a non-traditional church Christmas play. Although it is set during Christmas and includes a Christmas “message,” the play focuses primarily on modern, “real life” family issues, which include both moments of hilarity and sobering dysfunction.

Spiro woman arrested in stabbing

A Spiro woman is accused of stabbing her boyfriend during an argument with a knife he had gifted her for her birthday.
According to the affidavit, LeFlore County Deputy Rebecca Hendrix was dispatched to the Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center emergency room on Dec. 11, to investigate a domestic abuse claim. According to his statement to Hendrix, stabbing victim Richard Edwards claimed that his girlfriend, Blinda Davis, 40, of Spiro, allegedly stabbed him.

Talihina school damaged in winter storm

December 13, 2013

Last weekend's icy storm caused moderate damage to the roof of the Talihina High School building, leaving a classroom ceiling caved in and unsafe conditions in two hallway restrooms.
"I'd been out over the weekend looking around, checking for damage," said Talihina Superintendent Jason Lockhart, "but the issues on the roof weren't visible from the ground. It wasn't until we went inside on Tuesday to check the heating and light systems that we discovered that the ceiling had caved in."

Fans: Send off Pirates in style

All Poteau Pirate fans who will be in town to see the high school football team head out for a state championship battle in Stillwater Saturday are encouraged gather for a grand send-off.
On Friday at about 12:45 fans are asked to line Broadway from Shockley’s Auto Sales to the Choctaw Travel Plaza, donning Pirate colors of red, white and black.

Two injured in collision

December 11, 2013

Traffic was detoured around Oklahoma Highway 112 early Wednesday morning after a head on collision injured two people.
According to emergency personnel, a gray Ford Mustang appeared to cross the center line for unknown reasons striking a red Ford pickup.
Emergency personnel said the driver of each vehicle was injured but in stable condition, both treated by LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services at the scene then taken to Fort Smith, Ark., hospitals.
