A Shady Point man who was
arrested in September for disorderly
conduct and discharging a
firearm in city limits filed a
small claims lawsuit against
several county and municipal
entities after he alleged they
failed to return property to him
after his arrest.
Charley Wayne Covey, Sr.,
65, filed the small claims case
naming the Shady Point Police
Department, the Shady Point
Board of Trustees and the
LeFlore County Detention
Center as defendants in his claim
for financial reimbursement for
lost property.
According to the affidavit
filed by Covey, he stated the
February 6th
A safety meeting held
Wednesday afternoon
involving county elected
officials, law enforcement
and safety personnel concluded
with a unanimous
decision to increase security
inside the LeFlore County
Courthouse.
In the past, the courthouse
employed a full time
deputy for security through
special funds incurred
through the collection of
fines and costs. Due to a
decrease in collection of
fines the position was
restructured to guarantee
security present during protective
order court dockets
and high risk court proceedings
A group of business owners in attendance
at the special meeting of the Poteau
City Council Wednesday night expressed
their concerns regarding the proposed hotel
tax that will be voted on later this year.
The group made up of hotel and motel
owners in Poteau addressed Poteau Mayor
Jeff Shockley and the members of the city
council before the council voted to pass a
resolution that will begin the process for a
special election in April.
The proposed tax would be a five percent
tax collected locally by the city on
money paid by people staying in motels,

Thanks to her unique talent, Poteau teen Alyssa Kramer has become an internet celebrity.
Alyssa can repeat any word spoken to her backwards in under three seconds.
A video of Alyssa demonstrating her talent was posted to YouTube this summer and has since received nearly 400,000 views.
Sources close to Alyssa and her family say that Alyssa will appear on NBC's Today Show on Wednesday morning.

January 25th
This local pooch was found Sunday in Malvern, Arkansas. There is no name on the tag, but the tag does show that the dog received a rabies vaccination at Poteau Valley Veterinary Clinic. If you recognize this dog or have any information, please call Deanna Keenan at (501) 844-1301.
January 23rd
Tori Giles has been named Miss CASC 2012, replacing Cheyenne Carter. Dr. Brandon Webb, CASC President stated, “It is our sincere pleasure to bestow the Miss CASC title to Tori. She has been a wonderful student leader on our campus, and to now have her represent us as Miss CASC is an honor.”
January 20th
There was a two motor vehicle accident on the Cavanal Scenic Expressway at approximately 8:30 a.m. Friday morning. The accident occurred at the intersection of the expressway and Franzini Street. No injuries were reported, though, one lane of traffic was closed while officials cleared he roadway.
January 19th
LeFlore County citizens may soon be able to opt for membership in the largest independently owned and operated air-ambulance company in the United States. At the regular monthly meeting of the LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services Board meeting members heard from Judy Dyke, a regional director of base operations for Air Evac Lifeteam, an air-ambulance company which operates the world's largest fleet of more than 100 medically-equipped helicopters.
A team from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) began a two month project with the U.S. Forest last week. The 10 member team will receive Type 2 Wild Land Firefighter Certification from the U.S. Forest Service and will use the training to assist with numerous precribed burns. In addition to the fire services, the team will work to complete fence removal, trail building and maintenance projects. The team will also return for another two months during the summer, from mid-May through mid-July, to assist with fire and other related tasks.
Liala Dunigan has received a new heart. According to sources close to the family, Liala Dunigan received a heart transplant at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Sources say that the Dunigan family received a call Monday evening that a heart had been located for baby Liala. Liala has been on the heart transplant list since December when doctors discovered an undiagnosed heart defect after she became ill. She was only three months old when she was life flighted to Arkansas Children's Hospital and underwent open-heart surgery.
