Breaking News: Death at Runestone State Park

ACCORDING TO LEFLORE COUNTY SHERIFF BRUCE CURNUTT THE DEATH THAT OCCURRED TUESDAY EVENING AT THE RUNESTONE PARK IS BEING TREATED AS A SUICIDE. THE DETAILS OF THE INCIDENT NOR THE NAME OF THE DECEASED WILL NOT BE RELEASED. THE BODY HAS BEEN SENT TO THE STATE MEDICAL EXAMINERS OFFICE.

Breaking News: Liala Dunigan to receive new heart

According to sources close to the Dunigan family, a heart has been found for little Liala Dunigan.

Liala, who was born August 31, was diagnosed with a heart defect after she became ill in December. While being treated at Arkansas Children's Hospital, Liala's doctors placed her on the heart transplant list.

The PDN is awaiting further information about this exciting new development.

CASC dedicates new building

CASC held a dedication ceremony today for the grand opening of the Deanna J. Reed Science and Math Center. The seven million dollar facility will begin hosting classes next week.

In today's paper, Wednesday, January 11, the article with regard to the opening of the Science and Math Center at CASC, states that the new building was to open its doors today, again we are sorry for any inconveniences that may have been caused. The Deanna J. Reed Science and Math Center's dedication will be Thursday, January 12, at 1:00 p.m.

Man trapped under vehicle

Poteau Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services and Emergency management officials were called to a Poteau residence a short time ago in reference to a man being pinned underneath.
Rescue crews with the Fire Department used the jaws of life to lift the vehicle from the man whose leg was pinned under the vehicle.
He was transported to a local hospital by LeFlore County EMS.

County Unemployment numbers increase

According to a report from the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission local unemployment rates held steady across the state during the month of November with two out of 77 counties reporting an increase. Latimer County still holds the top seat for the highest unemployment rate in the state at 10.1 percent and for the first time in months, LeFlore County was no longer runner up, not even listed in the top three. the OESC states in their report that in November, Oklahoma's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 6.1 percent over the course of the month.

woman dies in accident

A Shady Point woman was fatally injured in an accident on Latham Road Wednesday afternoon. According to the accident report released by the Oklahoma Highway patrol, Vernon Blake,93, of Shady Point was driving a 1994 Chevy Van six miles west of Shady Point when the van ran off the right side of the road and struck an electric pole.

Afternoon Fire

A house on Whitney St. in Poteau suffered major damage after the home caught fire Wednesday afternoon. According to Poteau Fire Chief John Pickle the fire appeared to have been caused by an electrical space heater. No one was home at the time of the fire. Poteau Fire Department put out the blaze while the Poteau Police Department detoured traffic on the heavily traveled roadway.

Early Evening Accident

January 4, 2012

Members of the Poteau Police Department along with Poteau and Shady Point Fire Departments and LeFlore County EMS were called the the scene of a serious one vehicle accident just north of Poteau on State Highway 59 this evening shortly after 6 p.m. According to witnesses at the scene the accident occurred when a 16-year-old female was thrown from her horse near the Arena Steakhouse. The horse reportedly then ran from the Arena to Hwy. 59 and into traffic where it was struck by a vehicle driven by a Shady Point man traveling southbound towards Poteau.
