CASC regents meet in Sallisaw

The Carl Albert State College board of regents named Kathy Quirk executive director of the CASC Development Foundation during a regular meeting at the college's Sallisaw campus.
Quirk has been managing the foundation on an interim basis, but the regents' actions made the job hers officially.
The regents meet twice a year at the J.T. & Mary Jo Stites Multipurpose Room at the Jerry Hetherington Center in Sallisaw, according to Judi White, director of public relations and marketing for Carl Albert State College.

Main Street Matters awards

Poteau Main Street Matters Executive Director Keri Powers said she’s hoping to see the pocket park on Dewey Street get a facelift. Powers made her remarks at the organization’s annual banquet Tuesday at the Reynolds Center.
She showed artist renderings of some of the planned improvements, including replacing the concrete flooring of the park with sod and building a stone and brick entry with iron gates that could be locked at night. Among the plans for raising money for the project are selling engraved bricks.

House committee approves roofing bill

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma House committee approved a proposal Wednesday that its sponsor said would help protect Oklahomans from what he called subpar roofing "vultures" that swoop into the state after severe weather to take advantage of the desperate.
Rep. Mark McBride, R-Moore, introduced a bill that would require roofers to buy a $30,000 bond the state could use to help reimburse customers for any damage caused. The House Economic Development and Financial Services Committee approved the proposal without opposition and sent it to the full House for consideration.

Beware of new phone scam

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak and the Medicare Assistance Program are alerting Oklahoma seniors to a new telephone scam. The warning comes after reports of scammers telling victims that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires them to gather personal information for a national medical card. But such a card does not exist.

Hope Assistance Program to help the elderly

The Hope Assistance Program can help you or a loved one with personal items such as adult briefs and diapers, bed pads, disposable gloves and similar items.
The KEDDO Area Agency on Aging is striving to close gaps of services in its planning service areas of Choctaw, Haskell, Latimer, LeFlore, McCurtain, Pittsburg and Pushmataha counties through “Hope Assistance” and other programs.

Sheriff's Department seizes marijuana grow operation

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department seized an indoor marijuana growing operation that appeared to be expanding, according to Sheriff Rob Seale.
Seale said that, on Friday night, his deputies, along with agents of the District 16 Drug Task Force and officers of the Panama Police Department, served a search warrant on a home belonging to Steve Cox in the Tucker community. When officers entered the home, they discovered 36 marijuana plants growing inside a vacant bedroom. The plants were in various stages of growth.

Several injured; one dead in head-on collision

March 21, 2013

A head on collision occured on Oklahoma Highway 112 near Smart Mart Store three miles east of Poteau at approximately 7 p.m.
According to emergency personnel on the scene, several people were injured in the accident. All the accident victims were taken by LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services to Fort Smith hospitals where a passenger from a silver PT Cruiser involved in the accident later perished from injuries. One person refused medical treatment.

Mountain Gate Poker Run t-shirt design unveiled

The t-shirt design for the sixth annual Mountain Gate Poker Run, scheduled for Saturday, April 13, has been unveiled.
This year's T-shirt sponsors have outdone themselves this year with an eye-catching design, according to Talihina Chamber of Commerce Director Vera Nelson.
Shirt colors include white, black, blue, hot pink and gray. They should be in the chamber office by Monday, Nelson said.
