Benefit dinner to be held for Hodgen family

March 31, 2014

In less than two hours today [March31] a benefit dinner will begin to help a Hodgen family who lost their home to fire.
The dinner will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Hodgen School cafeteria to benefit Mike and Lisa Cox and family.

Trade Show two weeks away

The eighth annual Eastern Oklahoma Ag Trade Show will be held again this year April 8 at the LeFlore County Fairgrounds. 
Speakers will be on hand to discuss a variety of agricultural topics. The doors will be open to the public at 8:30 a.m. for visiting the exhibitor booths. The morning speaker sessions will begin at 9 a.m.
Afternoon sessions will be held from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Parts of bypass closing for half marathon

The state Transporation Department plans to block the northbound lanes to motor vehicles from 7-11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, for the Vike Hike half marathon, according to race host Carl Albert State College.
All northbound traffic will be detoured onto Broadway at the south exit near Riverside Ford and Assembly of God church.

EOMC landscaping projects discussed

Howe Schools to host blood drive

Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) and Howe High School have teamed up to save the lives of those in local hospitals. A blood drive will be held on Monday, March 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those who are healthy and 16 years* or older can typically give blood.

All blood donors will also receive a “FEEL BOLD” T-shirt, free health screenings and Donor Rewards Points.

Blood donors can choose to forgo the T-shirt. Then, funds designated for this item will be donated to Global Blood Fund, a nonprofit that supports struggling blood centers abroad.

EMS Board to meet today

The LeFlore County Emergency Medical Service Board will meet today [March 17] at 4 p.m. at the 911 Center located on south broadway in Poteau.

UPDATE: Flooding continues through today

March 17, 2014

The Flood Warning continues[March 17] for the Poteau river near Panama after more than 3 inches of rain fell over a 24-hour period. The NWS issued the warning until Tuesday morning.
At 8:30 am Monday, the stage was 33.15 feet with flood stage at 29.0 feet.
Moderate flooding is occurring but the river is near crest.
The Poteau river near Panama will continue to crest and fall below flood stage by early Tuesday morning.
At 33.0 feet, moderate flooding of agricultural lands occurs between Shady Point to Arkoma. Williams Road east of Panama and some local farm roads are flooded.

UPDATE: Breaking News - more roads closed due to flooding

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Office is reporting road closures due to flooding from overnight and Sunday [March 16] rains.
Blue Goose road from Brazil Creek to Mine Road is closed and the low water bridge near New Spiro Lake also is closed.
Williams Road also is closed from the Poteau River Bridge west toward Panama.
Bailey Road and Racetrack Road have not been closed but deputies report the low water bridges are flooded and encourage motorists to find alternate routes of travel.

High speed pursuit ends in crash, 1 arrest

Poteau Police put the brakes on speedster Timothy John Kaczynski, 24, of Poteau after he allegedly led them on more than a 30-minute chase.
Reaching speeds up to 90-miles per hour that continued through residential streets, Kaczynski led police through the north end of Poteau until he struck a tree and fled on foot, according to the police report.
Police said he was later found hiding behind a trash dumpster near the accident and was arrested.
