Fundraiser filled weekend slated

"Hungry Like A Wolf"

The inaugural “Hungry Like the Wolf” 5k/10k Fun Run and 5K Fun Walk will take place at noon Saturday [Feb. 22] at Blues Park in Heavener.
The entry fee is $25 per participant. Checks should be made out to Heavener Public Schools. All proceeds will benefit the Heavener cross country and track programs.
The races will begin at Blues Park, located at the south end of town on U.S. 59, and will end at Daylight Donuts at 710 U.S. 59 north.
Parking will be available all along the race path, with shuttle service to the race's beginning.

Emergency crews respond to injury accident

Police, fire and Emergency Medical Services are responding [Feb. 21 2:20 p.m.] to a single vehicle accident near Fanshawe.
The only details Poteau Daily News has at this time is that one person was injured in the crash.

Annual cook-off to kickoff today

February 21, 2014

The annual chili cooking contest hosted by Carl Albert State College and Walmart will begin at 11 a.m. today [Feb. 21] at Costner-Balentine Student Center on the Poteau campus.

Town of Leflore to hold meeting

February 20, 2014

The town of Leflore will hold its biannual meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, March 3, in the Community Building.
The agenda includes possible appointment of a new Town Board member.

DAV to host 'Forget-Me-Not' drive

February 20, 2014

The Disabled American Veterans Forget-Me-Not drive will be held Feb. 28 and March 1.
The drive raises funds to support DAV services and assistance.
DAV LeFlore County Poteau Chapter and Unit 63 will be at Walmart both days taking donations and selling Red Shirt Friday "Until the Troops Come Home" T-shirts and hoodies, military hats and pocket knifes.

Fire crews extinguish AES fire

Several fire departments responded to a fire at AES Shady Point Thursday [Feb. 20].
According to AES Director of Government Operations and Public Relations Lundy Kiger, an off-line boiler caught fire.
No injuries were reported.
Kiger said the cause of the fire will be investigated.

Hospital moves forward with repairs

The LeFlore County Hospital Authority met Tuesday [Feb. 18] and approved the creation of plans to meet state standards for the remodel of the hospitals surgical department.
The surgical and obstetrical departments were closed Friday morning after the Oklahoma Department of Health found mechanical, structural and operational deficiencies.
The formulation of plans are expected to take no more than four weeks.
More details about the meeting and the engineering and architectural plans will be published in the Wednesday edition of the Poteau Daily News.

Burn ban issued for LeFlore County

February 18, 2014

On Tuesday [Feb. 18] morning the LeFlore County County Commissioners issued a burn ban for the county.
State and U.S. Forestry are exempt from the ban.

LeFlore County Hospital Authority to meet regarding shutdown

February 18, 2014

The LeFlore County Hospital Authority will meet today [Tuesday, Feb. 18] at 1 p.m. in the second floor conference room of Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center.
Discussion will include the recent survey results by the Oklahoma State Department of Health and the hospital's plan of action in correcting the listed deficiencies.

EOMC faced with surgical, obstetrical department shutdowns

February 14, 2014

Child birth and surgeries are on hold at Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center after a state-mandated shut down.
According to EOMC Medical Director B. Don Schumpert, the shutdown was the result of an Oklahoma State Health Department visit.
