Trail of Tears Walk held in Spiro

The public is invited to join the 2013 Trail of Tears Walk is scheduled for May 18 at Skullyville Cemetery outside the city limits of Spiro, according to the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
Participants are asked to come early and park at the Choctaw Community Center and ride a shuttle bus to the starting point of the walk.
Drivers will begin taking passengers to the cemetery at 9 a.m.
The walk will begin at 10 a.m.
Lunch will be served to all who participate.

American Legion to host fishing derby

Heavener American Legion Post 188 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8403 will hosting the Kids Fishing Derby on 18 May 2013 at the City Park Pond.
The Derby will be a catch, weigh and release event to promote conservation.
Competition categories will be age 5 and under, 6 to 10 and 11 to 15.
First through third prizes will be awarded in each category by weight, with a grand prize for overall best weight. The derby will run from 9 a.m. through noon with free hotdogs and chips served from noon to 1 p.m. while results are tallied.

Area DAV recognizes local volunteers

Disabled American Veterans Chapter 63 salutes it members and supporters in honor of National Volunteer Month.
DAV volunteers have has logged more than 5,000 volunteer hours, according to chapter Cmdr. Charlie Horsley.
DAV volunteers have aided residents who have lost everything to fires, helped with the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals at the school and presented Veterans Day programs at schools and nursing homes, Horsley said..

Howe Alumni reunion slated for May 18

The Howe School Reunion/Banquet will be held Saturday, May 18, at Howe Public Schools.
All graduates, former classmates, teachers, staff, and their families are invited. The event will be first come, first served with admission $10 at the door. Yearly alumni dues are $1, payable to Howe Alumni Organization.
The doors will open at 10 a.m. in the cafeteria and close at 2 p.m. reopening at 5 p.m. The meal will be served from 6-7 p.m., and reunion attire will be casual. The meal will include, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, rolls, dessert and drinks.

Area paramedic receives top honors at state ceremony

LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services and employees were honored during the annual Oklahoma Emergency Medical Technician Association banquet.
Anthony Stankewitz, 21, of Spiro, heard his name out called out during an awards ceremony last week in Tulsa as the 2012 Paramedic of the year. The award, which is peer based by nomination, recognized Stankewitz as the top outstanding Paramedic in Oklahoma.
His nomination was written by LCEMS Director, Dave Grovdahl.

Tulsa Life Flight; A new era of emergency care

A new era in emergency medical care has begun in LeFlore County with the landing of Tulsa Life Flight at its new base at the Robert S. Kerr Airport in Poteau.
Tulsa Life Flight base four, owned by Air Methods Corp., began its local operations Jan. 12. By opening the Poteau location, Life Flight officials said they have greatly reduced their flight time, by approximately 30 minutes, compared with a run that was responding from the next nearest base in Keefeton.

Choctaw Casino Hotel opens May 1

POCOLA — Choctaw Casino Hotel, one of nine casinos operated by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, is opening the next phase of a multi-million dollar expansion that includes a hotel, event venue, additional gaming and a parking garage.

State Land Judging Contest

Approximately 1,000 teenagers and adults — members of FFA and 4-H Chapters from throughout the United States and their parents, coaches and teachers — will come to Oklahoma City next week, as they have the first week of May for more than six decades, to compete in a national educational competition. The National Land and Range Judging Contest, a three-day event that stresses soil and plant science, land management and conservation, marks its 62nd anniversary beginning on Tuesday, April 30.

Dr. Ted Kondos, styling smiles since 1981

Dr. Ted Kondos has been serving the dental needs of Poteau and the surrounding communities since 1981. Many of his patients have been with his practice since he began with Dr. Ken Hammond 32 years ago.
“I am thankful for all the patients who have visited my practice and have accepted me and my family into the community. My wife, Shaun and I have raised our three children here and have been delighted to be a part of Poteau,” Kondos said.
