Weather related closings

March 4, 2014

The Carl Albert State College Poteau and Sallisaw campuses, which planned to open at 11 a.m. today [March 4] will remain closed.
All other schools in LeFlore County also are closed.
The LeFlore County Courthouse is open.

Road conditions changing, not for the better

March 3, 2014

At about 2 p.m. Monday [ March 3] area police warned that roads are becoming slushy but are almost immediately turning back to ice. The traction earlier provided by the gritty sleet is now becoming a mirror-like ice sheet on top of the already slick roads.

Road conditions not quickly improving

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department is reporting roads throughout the county remain slick and hazardous. Motorists are encouraged to remain home unless it is an emergency.
Since 9 a.m. today [March 3] several vehicles have slid off the road and become stuck in the ditch.
Poteau police have had to help several drivers in the last few hours.
Although the sun is shining, temperatures are not expected to get above freezing so ice-free roads are not expected until tomorrow.

All LeFlore County Schools are closed today due to the winter weather impact on travel. Law enforcement officials are urging motorists to stat off the road unless it is an emergency.

Wilburton receives funding to improve community

The City of Wilburton was awarded a $300 grant by Keep Oklahoma Beautiful (KOB) to support their “Wilburton Cleanup” effort this Spring as part of KOB's Great American Cleanup™. 

The Great American Cleanup™ is the nation’s largest annual cleanup, beautification and community improvement program. An estimated 60,000 Oklahomans join KOB for this year’s cleanup efforts. This national program of Keep America Beautiful is sponsored in Oklahoma by Devon Energy and coordinated by KOB.

The countdown to Poteauopoly has begun

The clock is ticking as Poteau Chamber of Commerce members prepare for the annual banquet to be held tonight [Feb. 27] at 6 p.m.
Those in attendance will be treated to dinner and live entertainment as several area chamber members take to the stage in what still remains a surprise show.
Poteauopoly will be in full swing as banquet goers try to stay out of jail and collect the most properties.
With 700 tickets available, the Chamber announced this morning they were sold-out and no more tickets are available.

Condoleezza Rice, Former Secretary of State, Speaking at U of A on March 5

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Condoleezza Rice, former U.S. secretary of state under President George W. Bush, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, in Barnhill Arena. The lecture is free, open to the public, and no tickets are needed to attend. The event is part of the student-funded Distinguished Lecture Series at the University of Arkansas.

Wister students give gift of life

Eric Rose, 17, Wister High School student donated blood during today's [Tuesday, Feb. 25] OBI blood drive. There is still time to donate. The drive ends at 5:30 p.m.

National Wild Turkey Federation hosts annual banquet

February 25, 2014

The banquet will be held at Poteau High School on March 6.
Tickets cost $65 for couples and $50 for singles. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. To join the most cumulative single-species conservation organization at this event call Don Clutwood at (918) 649-7470 to reserve tickets.
