Adult trivia challenge hosted by Stigler High School

Trivia Challenge is a fun opportunity for adults to compete for the title “Champions of Trivia”!  This year's event will be held Monday, March 4, 6:30 pm, at Stigler High School.  All that is required to enter is (1) find four people to be on a team (all team members must be 21 or older); (2) choose a team name (be creative!); (3) send $60 entry fee (along with team name, contact person and phone number) to SHS Academic Team, 309 NW “E” Street, Stigler, OK 74462 OR call Patrick Phillips at (918) 967-8834 or (918) 470-6201.  All proceeds from the Trivia Challenge go to help fund the SHS Academi

LeFlore County Sheriff's Department investigates stabbing

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department is investigating a stabbing that occurred on Third Street in Fort Coffee Tuesday afternoon.
According to Undersheriff Kendall Morgan, a man is being treated at Sparks Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark., after having his throat cut.
A search for the person responsible for the stabbing is ongoing.

Severe weather threat continues

According to the National Weather Service, LeFlore County will remain under threat of severe weather until this evening.

Leaders in area law enforcement meet Tuesday

Chiefs of police from several towns in LeFlore County along with the District Attorney's Office and Sheriff Rob Seale participated in a meeting at the LeFlore County Child Advocacy Center Tuesday afternoon.
The meeting was held to discuss changes in policy and procedure in regard to child crimes.
Members of the Advocacy Center along with other child services organizations were present to speak during the meeting.

Storm Spotter training to be held in Poteau

LeFlore County Emergency Management will host it's annual storm spotter training class in February.
According to LCEM Director Michael Davidson, there are approximately 90 trained storm spotters in LeFlore County and they are an essential part of the early warning system.
If you would like to attend the free class, it will be held Feb. 25 at 6:30 at the Poteau Kiamichi Technology Center. Early registration is not necessary.

House damaged in weekend fire

January 28, 2013

A home was damaged by fire Saturday night in Poteau.
According to Poteau Fire Chief Jon Pickel, an electric space heater is likely to blame for the blaze at 1005 Grady St. The fire occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. Saturday.
Pickel said the space heater was located in the doorway between a bedroom and the living room. The fire spread to the front porch of the residence doing extensive damage, said the chief.
No one was home at the time of the fire.

Spiro to host Mayfest

January 25, 2013

Spiro will celebrate Mayfest on May 4.
Events will include a craft show, plant sale, rummage sale, pancake breakfast and other food items, the library summer kick-off show and a 5K run.
Other events will be added in coming months.
The craft show will be in the Methodist Church parking lot on U.S. 59 and Main Street. To reserve a booth, contact mayfest@outlook.com or (918) 839-0176 to receive an information packet. An 11x11 booth will be $25 until March 15.

Chamber Banquet announced

The Poteau Chamber of Commerce has announced that the 94th annual Chamber Banquet will take place February 28 at 6 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center in Poteau.
Tickets for the event are $25 with corporate tables available for $325.

Cusick charged in connection with Spiro house fire

January 25, 2013

A Spiro man has been arrested after a warrant for his arrest was issued for assault and battery by means likely to produce death and kidnapping.
Elec E. Cusick, 39, of Spiro, was found unconscious in the front yard of a home on Stewart Loop Monday night along with his girlfriend, Myrtle Cooper, 47, of Spiro.
The two were found after their home caught fire. According to the affidavit, Cooper suffered burns and lacerations along with facial and skull fractures.

PHS Drama Dept. to produce student one act plays

January 24, 2013

Friday at 7 p.m. at the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center in Poteau the Poteau High School Drama Department and Thespian Troupe #3283 will present three one act plays written and directed by PHS students. Admission for the show is $3.
