Sheriff's Department seizes marijuana grow operation

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department seized an indoor marijuana growing operation that appeared to be expanding, according to Sheriff Rob Seale.
Seale said that, on Friday night, his deputies, along with agents of the District 16 Drug Task Force and officers of the Panama Police Department, served a search warrant on a home belonging to Steve Cox in the Tucker community. When officers entered the home, they discovered 36 marijuana plants growing inside a vacant bedroom. The plants were in various stages of growth.

Several injured; one dead in head-on collision

A head on collision occured on Oklahoma Highway 112 near Smart Mart Store three miles east of Poteau at approximately 7 p.m.
According to emergency personnel on the scene, several people were injured in the accident. All the accident victims were taken by LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services to Fort Smith hospitals where a passenger from a silver PT Cruiser involved in the accident later perished from injuries. One person refused medical treatment.

Mountain Gate Poker Run t-shirt design unveiled

The t-shirt design for the sixth annual Mountain Gate Poker Run, scheduled for Saturday, April 13, has been unveiled.
This year's T-shirt sponsors have outdone themselves this year with an eye-catching design, according to Talihina Chamber of Commerce Director Vera Nelson.
Shirt colors include white, black, blue, hot pink and gray. They should be in the chamber office by Monday, Nelson said.

PBA Talent Contest looking for performers

Panama Businesses and Associates is looking to showcase local performers during its second annual talent contest.
The organization will hold the PBA Talent Contest at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 27, in the Panama Elementary School cafeteria.
The contest is open to all ages and talent categories including singing, dance, comedy, magic, etc. There will be three age divisions: 3-12 years old, 13-17 years old, and 18 and older. Winners will receive cash prizes and a plaque provided by AES Shady Point and Panama Hardware.

James Haskin files notice to appeal conviction

James Haskin Jr., 61, of Monroe, has filed a notice to appeal his sentence of more than two centuries after being convicted for sex crimes against his children.
Haskin was convicted by a jury on nine counts of child neglect and three counts of child sexual abuse.
In February, District Judge Jon Sullivan followed the jury's suggested sentencing and gave Haskin 245 years in prison.

Former OU quarterback Steve Davis died in Indiana plane crash

AP- Former Oklahoma quarterback Steve Davis was among two victims in a plane crash Sunday in South Bend, Ind. A South Bend television station confirmed the death with the cororner.
Two persons survived the crash and are hospitalized. A woman on the ground was injured. The second victim has not been identified.
Davis, 60, was best known as the Sooners’ quarterback from 1973-75. During that span OU went 32-1-1 and claimed back-to-back national championships in 1974 and 1975. His 32 wins were a program record until it was surpassed this past season by Landry Jones.

Okla. House member apologizes to colleagues

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A Democratic House member who shouted at a Republican colleague following a late-night floor session has apologized on the House floor.

Heavener Democrat James Lockhart delivered a brief but emotional apology Wednesday from the well at the front of the House. He then received a standing ovation.

Following a floor session on Tuesday that lasted until midnight, Lockhart could be heard shouting at Faxon Republican Rep. Don Armes, who was presiding over the chamber. Several Democrats were frustrated Armes wouldn't recognize members of their party for various motions.

Fire victim dies; boyfriend may face murder charges

LeFlore County Undersheriff Kendall Morgan confirmed Myrtly Cooper, 47, of Spiro, passed away Thursday morning at a Tulsa hospital. Cooper was the alleged victim of an assault and a house fire on Jan. 14 and has been listed in critical condition since the incident.
Elec E. Cusick, 39, of Spiro, was charged with kidnapping and assault and battery by means likely to produce death in connection with Cooper's injuries.
