Area Republicans to hold monthly meeting

April 28, 2014

The Leflore County Republicans will hold their monthly meeting on today [April 28] at the Patrick Lynch Public Library in Poteau. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Congressman Mullin's wife, Christie, will be on hand to speak. Also State Representative candidate Traci Barnes will speak to the group. All Republicans and Conservatives are invited to attend.

Storms leave damage, cause power outages

Sunday evening storms left damage in their wake and hundreds without power in Poteau.
Reported damages include the Tower Drive-in loosing its roof, cars and homes damaged by toppled trees and several utility poles downed near the Choctaw Country Club.
OG&E still is working [April 28 9:45 a.m.] to restore power to hundreds in Poteau who have been in the dark since about 10 p.m. Sunday evening.

Strong storms forecast for LeFlore County

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, scattered thunderstorms will develop this morning and into the afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front. A few may strengthen to severe levels between 10 am and 4 pm with half dollar size hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph the main threats. The thunderstorms will be east of the region by the evening hours as dry air moves in behind the front.

PHS Band wins state competition

Poteau Police and the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department provide a grand entrance into town to the Poteau High School Band as they returned to Poteau having won first place at state concert competition Wednesday [April 23].

Special election called for sales tax

April 21, 2014

The LeFlore County Commissioners approved an order and resolution Monday morning [April 21] calling for a special election for a half cent of 1 percent sales tax to benefit Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center.

Runestone egg hunt huge success

The annual Heavener Runestone Easter Egg Hunt hosted by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter drew a large number of area youth as they searched for the 4,900 hidden eggs.

Area music students to compete in state festival

April 21, 2014

Members of the Treble Choir of the Cavanal Chorale who were named district festival winners will compete at the Oklahoma State Junior Music Festival Competition April 26.
The Poteau Musical Arts Society provides the entry fees. The festival is sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Commissioners to discuss sales tax

April 21, 2014

The LeFlore County Commissioners will meet today [April 21] at 9 a.m. to decide if a sales tax proposition will make it to the ballot for county voters. The one-half of 1 percent sales tax will benefit Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center.
The commissioners meet at the LeFlore County Courthouse.

Commissioners set to discuss hospital Monday

April 18, 2014

The LeFlore County Commissioners are scheduled to discuss Monday [April 21] adopting an order to provide a one-half of one percent county sales tax to benefit Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center. If approved they will discuss a resolution for a special election to let the voters decide.
The meeting will be held at 9 a.m. at the commissioners meeting room at the LeFlore County Courthouse.
