Vike@Nite category results released

November 1, 2013

This year’s Vike @ Nite 5K awarded prizes in several categories of competition in addition to who crossed the finish line in the top spots as previously announced.
The Most Creative Costume awards went to Traci Barnes, Susan Manlove, Cathleen Manlove and Sam Kiger. This group won Mazzio’s gift certificates.
The Largest Corporate Team was represented by Southern Star and they won a traveling Viking helmet trophy.

Miss PHS pageant slated for Saturday

Each year students take to the stage for the annual Miss Poteau High School pageant. This year's event proceeds will help the PHS Silver Steppers dance team travel to the National Dance Team Competition in March.
The pageant will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. Doors open to the public at 6 p.m.
Twenty-two contestants will answer onstage questions, participate in a casual wear and evening gown competition. The opening act for the night will be a choreographed dance performed by the contestants.

Area 10 Special Olympics Bowling Competition has large turnout

The Area 10 Special Olympics Bowling Competition took place Wednesday at Strike-A-Lot Lanes.
There were teams from Poteau, Arkoma, Cameron, Heavener, Howe, Muskogee and Stilwell with bowlers competing in singles and unified events. The unified competition was a doubles team consisting of a Special Olympian and a non-disabled partner.
There were 80 Special Olympians who competed in Wednesday's event as well as 28 unified teams.
All athletes had to compete in an area competition to be able to compete at the Oklahoma State Winter Games, which will take place in January in Norman.

Former Lynch students invited to library grand opening

With the grand opening of the Patrick Lynch Public Library drawing near, the Friends of the PLPL are reaching out to all former students of Patrick Lynch for a special dedication.
According to the Friends, Lynch's former Poteau Primary School third-grade students now are Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors in area high schools. They, along with the teachers and staff who worked alongside Lynch and the public are invited to attend the grand opening on Sunday, Nov. 3 from 3-5 p.m. at the library located at 206 S. McKenna in Poteau.

Adopt-An-Angel application deadline on Friday

Friday is the last day LeFlore County Youth Services Inc. will accepting Adopt-An-Angel applications for this holiday season, according to Terri Krebs, executive director.
The Angel Tree Program helps around 900 or more county children receive Christmas gifts each year through donations from supporters.
The program is open to LeFlore County residents whose children will not be receiving gifts by any other means. When applying, please bring your ID, an income verification statement and your child’s information including Social Security number.

Sheriff's Office to host coloring contest

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department is calling to all Kindergarten and preschool students to grab their crayons or markers and enter the departments coloring contest.
All LeFlore County schools are encouraged to participate.
The contest began Monday and all submissions must be turned in by Nov. 15. To pick up the official coloring page, contact the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department at (918) 647-2317 or visit them at 100 S. Broadway in Poteau at the LeFlore County Courthouse.

HUGS program continues to grow

Wister High School 4-H member Adrianna Curnutt and National Honor Society classmate Colton Lynn spread out the many items they were able to purchase as part of this years HUGS (Hats, Underwear, Gloves and Socks) program. The program is co-sponsored by the LeFlore County Health Department and the clothing give-away was in conjunction with flu immunization day for small children. According to Curnutt, 1,902 items were given away Friday to area children.

Missing airplane found; pilot dead

The search for a missing plane believed to have crashed near Muse has come to an end after search crews located the wreckage and the pilot who was killed in the crash.
According to the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department, the crash site was located at about 1:50 p.m. Thursday. The search began Tuesday after Elmer Broadbent, 71, of Heber Springs, Ark., was reported to have not made it to his destination by his wife.

Search for missing plane, pilot continues

The search for a plane believed to have crashed near Pipe Springs Road resumed Wednesday morning after nightfall halted the search Tuesday night.
According to the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department, the search began after they were notified by the Federal Aviation Administration that a Piper 28, black, yellow and white in color had failed to make it's destination.
Elmer Ray Broadbent, 71, of Heber Springs, Ark., reportedly left Searcy, Ark., Monday at about 1:30 p.m headed to Elk Springs, Okla. Broadbent never arrived, according to officials.
