AES makes donations

February 8, 2013

Employees of AES Shady Point donated money they raised for two area organizations by hosting a silent auction during their annual employee Christmas Party. The employees raised more than $3,600 at the event. The Christian Free Medical Clinic and LeFlore County Youth Services each received checks in the amount of $1,834, after being chosen by AES employees as the beneficiaries of their fundraising efforts.

Wister switches to 911 system

Wister residents are asked to call 911 to report fires instead of the old Fire Department number.
The old number was disconnected Wednesday, according to City Manager Linston Chronister.
Under the new system, firefighters will be dispatched by radio from the LeFlore County 911 center in Poteau. The center dispatches fire and ambulance calls and routes other emergency calls to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
Wister officials posted news of the change on the city marquee at the park.
Non-emergency calls still can be made to City Hall at (918) 655-7421.

Calling all chocolate lovers

Friends of Buckley Library are hosting the second annual Chocolate Decadence Party and Contest from 5-6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Lowery Hotel. 
To enter -
• Bring your entry form to the library by Feb. 8.
• The recipe must contain chocolate. It does not have to be completely chocolate.
• Entry must serve at least 24.
• Drop off entry at the Lowery Hotel by 1 p.m. Feb. 12.
The criteria used for judging is creativity, taste and visual appeal.  Categories are professional or culinary student, adult amateur (18 and up), and youth amateur (Under 18).

Poteau man allegedly assaults girlfriend with a steak knife

A Poteau man was charged with domestic assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend with a steak knife.
Michael D. Jefferson, 42, of Poteau is accused of cutting his girlfriends cheek several times with a steak knife during an altercation. His girlfriend told police Jefferson also grabbed her by the neck.
Jefferson was jailed at the LeFlore County Detention Center in connection with the incident. He has been released after posting bail in the amount of $10,000.

Speeders beware; crackdown in residential area

With the completion of the Cavanal Scenic Expressway, traffic on Burkle Street in Poteau has become an issue for area law enforcement.
Burkle Street at one time was a dead end residential street with little or no traffic. It has since been extended to connect with the CSE causing an increase in traffic and the need to force residential speed limits.
A electric speed monitoring device has been placed on Burkle to remind commuters to keep their speed below 25.

Heavener man sentenced to ten years for rape

January 31, 2013

A man accused of second-degree rape involving a victim under the age of 16 has entered a plea of guilty and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Willie Amos, 62, of Heavener, entered a plea of guilty on Wednesday in front of District Judge Jon Sullivan. Sullivan sentenced Amos to 10 years in prison.
Amos has also been issued fines in the case and will be required to register as a sex offender when released from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

State Superintendent of Education visits Howe Public Schools

Howe Public Schools hosted the State Board of Educations regular monthly meeting Thursday afternoon.
State Superintendent of Education Janet Barresi toured the school prior to the meeting.
Topics discussed during the meeting including the advancement of technology in the school systems, academic, financial and personnel matters throughout the state.

More information released in Fort Coffee stabbing

January 30, 2013

A man was treated at a Fort Smith hospital Tuesday evening after three men allegedly beat him an stabbed him.
According to LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale, Saxon Matthew Lovell, 21, of Fort Coffee, was stabbed in the neck after being beaten in the front yard of his home.
Three men are being sought by the sheriff's department in connection with the incident.

Adult trivia challenge hosted by Stigler High School

LeFlore County Sheriff's Department investigates stabbing

The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department is investigating a stabbing that occurred on Third Street in Fort Coffee Tuesday afternoon.
According to Undersheriff Kendall Morgan, a man is being treated at Sparks Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark., after having his throat cut.
A search for the person responsible for the stabbing is ongoing.
