Choctaw Nation Healthcare Blood Drive Scheduled for Wednesday

Each donor at the Choctaw Nation Healthcare blood drive with Oklahoma Blood Institute will receive two admissions to the Tulsa Zoo.

Anyone who is 16 years and older is urged to donate Wednesday, June 4, from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Blood donors can feel good, knowing they are saving lives of community members with their donations at the Choctaw Nation Healthcare blood drive.  Donors with Oklahoma Blood Institute exclusively provide blood needed by all patients in the Choctaw Nation Health Care System and some 150 others across the state.

Red Oak Youth Baseball to Hold Benefit Spagetti Dinner

Family, friends and Red Oak youth will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on Sunday, June 8 from`11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Red Oak School Cafeteria.

The dinner will be donation only and will include an all-you-can-eat Spaghetti dinner, as well as homemade dessert.

Proceeds will benefit the Red Oak 12 and under Baseball team.

The Red Oak 12 and under ball team will be competing in the AA World Series in Gulf Shores, Ala., the first week of July.

Takeout will be available. Delivery will be available in Red Oak.

Two men stabbed; one critical

Two men stabbed multiple times Thursday night were hospitalized, one in critical condition, the other later released.
According to Heavener Police, at about 11:43 p.m. they responded to a fight involving several people at 607 E. First Street.
When they arrived they found 58-year-old Charles Poynter Jr. and Jerette Goforth, 24, suffering from multiple stab wounds, according to police.
Goforth was taken to a Fort Smith, Ark., hospital by LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services and is listed in critical condition, according to Heavener Police.

LeFlore County man jailed after girlfriend found dead

According to Tahlequah Police Chief Nate King, Scott Garrett, 30, of Poteau, was arrested early Thursday in connection to a reported assault by his girlfriend who was found dead Wednesday evening.
Brandy Racchelle Ellenburg-Baggs, 34, was found dead in her apartment by a friend at about 9 p.m. Wednesday, according to police. Police are investigating her death as suspicious.
Scott was arrested at about 2 a.m. today [May 29] in LeFlore County for the alleged assault of Ellenburg on Tuesday.

Jail administrator faces layoff at special meeting

The LeFlore County Detention Center Public Trust will hold a special meeting today [May 29] at 1 p.m. in the county commissioner board room of the courthouse.
Jail Administrator Claude Jones is on the agenda to possibly be laid off and an interim administrator appointed.

Poteau City Council calls special meeting

The Poteau City Council has called a special meeting as well as a special meeting of the Public Works Authority beginning at 5:15 p.m. today [May 27] at city hall.
Items to be discussed include sign ordinance on city property and delinquent hotel taxes. Also listed on both agendas is the appearance of petitions from the audience.
City Hall is located at 111 Peters Street in Poteau.

CASC releases Vike dates

The Carl Albert State College Vike Hike Committee has announced the dates for the next Vike@Nite 5k and also the next Vike Hike Half Marathon/5k.
The annual Vike@Nite Costume 5k will be Thursday, Oct. 23 beginning at 6 p.m. No road closure will take place, although traffic on the Poteau campus of CASC will be limited.
The Vike Hike Half Marathon and 5k will be Saturday, March 28, 2015, at 7 a.m. The bypass will be closed in accordance with ODOT recommendations just as it was for the 2014 event.
