Centennial celebration underway

The LeFlore County Extension of OSU Extension Services office is celebrating its 100th anniversary today [May 16] from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Join the Extension for their special day at the annex building located behind the LeFlore County Courthouse in Poteau.

Area students make SWOSU honor roll

May 15, 2014

A total of 1,187 students has been named to honor rolls at Southwestern Oklahoma State University for academic work during the 2014 spring semester on the Weatherford campus.
There were 486 students named to the President’s Honor Roll. An undergraduate student who earns all A’s in 12 or more hours during a semester qualifies for the President’s Honor Roll.
There were 701 students on the Dean’s Honor Roll. An undergraduate student who completes 12 semester hours with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher with no grade lower than “C” qualifies for the Dean’s Honor Roll.

Church garden completed with new angel

Pastor Tom Lackey of the Presbyterian Church at the corner of Witte and Clayton Streets in Poteau guides a new 4-foot angel being placed by Jake French Thursday morning [May 15]. The angel is nestled in the center of the large garden on the southeast side of the church.

Overwhelming turnout at benefit cookout

LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale and Panama Police Chief John Whiteaker try to keep up with the large number of people who ordered hamburgers and hotdogs during Wednesdays [May 14] benefit for 5-year-old Emma Mortenson, who was diagnosed with cancer.

Free genealogy workshop to be held at KTC

Al Hobaugh, chairman of the Cherokee West Genealogy Research and Development Association, will return to Poteau to conduct a free genealogy workshop May 27 at Kiamichi Technology Center.
Hobaugh said a similar workshop last drew a large attendance and led to a request for another one this year.
A free handout will be provided at the class. The three-hour workshop will start in the seminar room at 6 p.m. with the first 30 minutes being used as history class on the Western Cherokee Nation.

Donation helps summer program

Kay Thomas, representing the Poteau Women's League, presents a $250 check to Nancy Hamlin, head librarian at Patrick Lynch Public Library. The donation is for Carole Gill, children's librarian, to use toward expenses in the upcoming Summer Reading Program. The Poteau Women's League support the Summer Reading Program annually.

Parts of county under flood warning

May 12, 2014

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning Monday [May 10] lasting until Wednesday afternoon for parts of LeFlore County.
Areas under the warning are predominantly along the Poteau River.

Hundreds graduate from CASC

More than 500 Carl Albert State College students received their degrees or certificates of completion during graduation ceremonies Friday night. Seventeen of the graduates received two degree or certificates and 235 students graduated with honors.

Cavanal Killer underway

May 10, 2014

More than 400 runners and walkers are making the 5-mile trek to the top of the World's Highest Hill today [May 10, 9:40 a.m.] during the 7th annual Cavanal Killer.
The race started in the 400 block of Hughes Drive in Poteau at 9:30 a.m.

Jury says guilty

May 9, 2014

A LeFlore County jury returned a guilty verdict Friday [May 9] afternoon in the trial of Raymond Larry Nichols, 61, of Cameron.
Nichols shot Poteau business owner Joe Neff then disposed of his body in a Pocola strip pit in 2009.
The trial began Wednesday.
