Halloween event to add park movie

This year's downtown trick-or-treat event will have a new twist – a free movie in the Pocket Park, according to Keri Powers, Poteau Main Street executive director.
The Halloween treating will run from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, with the movie, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," showing at 4:30 p.m., Powers said.
Children and families are invited to visit downtown businesses for treats during the annual event.

In A Good Way hosts free event

In a Good Way farm in Talihina hosted a free homestead event Saturday.
The public was invited to the event, one of several by Mother Earth and Grit magazines during International Homesteading Education Month, according to program director Teddi Irwin.
In a Good Way is a nonprofit training farm established to give Native American men a second chance after prison, Irwin said.
Irwin said she and her son, Greg Duda, are Oklahoma Choctaws and have been working to get the project started for five years. They expect to begin screening applicants after Jan. 1.

October declared 4-H month

The LeFlore County Commissioners signed a proclamation Monday morning recognizing October as 4-H Month.

New health clinic coming to town

Teresa Huggis, CEO of Stigler Health and Wellness Center has announced that the healthcare provider’s Poteau location will open Monday, October 15.
The new location, across the street from the Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center in the old medical complex. Huggins stated that remodeling work had finished and workers were busy installing the final pieces of equipment.

Talihina Chamber of Commerce receives grant for Fall Festival

of Commerce has
announced that Talihina’s
Fall Foliage Festival has
been awarded a $3,500
grant from the Oklahoma
Arts Council.
Chamber officials said
the grant money will be
used to provide artists for
the festival to be held Oct.
26 and 27 at the Talihina
Old Gym.
The festival will include
a showcase of arts and
crafts, along with food,
inflatables and live entertainment,
including a street
dance Friday night.

Poteau man killed in weekend accident

September 24, 2012

A Poteau man lost his life Saturday morning in a single vehicle accident east of Poteau.
According to the accident report completed by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Justin Ward, 24, of Poteau, was driving a 2004 Kia westbound on Old Highway 112 one mile east of Poteau when he left the roadway and struck a ditch then striking a power pole and overturning one and half times pinning Ward inside.
Investigators believe the accident occurred when Ward fell asleep while driving.

Large pot farm busted

September 19, 2012

An investigation by several agencies resulted in the seizure of what is being called the largest marijuana growing operation ever found in LeFlore County.
According to an Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics spokesperson, several weeks of investigation culminated Tuesday night after OBN agents, members of the District 16 Drug Task Force, LeFlore County Sheriff’s Department, Poteau Police Department, U.S. Forestry Service, assisted by the County Commission District 3 staff, launched a raid on the operation. One man was arrested and four others fled the location on foot.

Warrant issued after house searched

An arrest warrant has been issued for Jeffrey Rolf, 41, of 303 North Ave. in Poteau in connection with an Aug. 22 search of his home by Poteau Police and the District 16 Drug Task Force.
He was arrested on Wednesday and was being held in the LeFlore County Detention Center.

New event to take place during Balloonfest

September 18, 2012

The first Balloonfest 5K walk/run will be held in conjunction with the annual festival but will be held adjacent to the LeFlore County Fairgrounds at the PARC complex.
The race will be held on Oct. 19 and will begin at 5 p.m.

Ricochet hits town Friday

September 18, 2012

Ricochet rebounds into Poteau Friday, closing out the summer concert series at the Donald W. Reynolds Center amphitheater with their polished brand of high-energy country music.
The Tulsa-based Wanda Watson Band will open the show at 7 p.m., returning to Poteau with a mix of blues, R and B and soul. Ricochet is scheduled to take the stage at 8:30 p.m., according to Reynolds Center Director Candace Martin.
Tickets will be $15 at the gate, $10 for students with a photo I.D., and free for children under 8.
