Panama Police K9 found murdered

The Panama Police Department is investigating the murder of the police departments K9, Creed, who was Officer Andy Bevil's partner.
According to Bevil, on Aug. 5 he and his family returned from church and when he went to feed and water his partner he found him dead from what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
The two-year-old German Shepard was purchased by the department in August 2011 and has been Bevil's partner ever since.
A memorial service for Creed is scheduled Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Panama First Baptist Church located at 107 Jones St.

Man jailed after ex-wife accuses him of rape

The LeFlore County District Attorney's Office filed charges against a man accused of raping his ex-wife.
Adam Gilbert Piaquadio, 37, of Fort Smith, is accused of sexually assaulting his ex-wife while she slept. According to the affidavit, he also took pictures of the incident. When his ex-wife woke up she reportedly screamed for help and called 911.
Police say the victim was standing in the front yard when they arrived and she claimed Piaquadio had tried to run over her with his vehicle as he was leaving.

Here comes the Beer and Chicken Band

The Concert under the Stars Series continues at the Donald W. Reynolds Center Saturday night with live music at the amphitheater.
The Beer and Chicken Band are scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. They play country, rock, pop and even a little disco.
The cost of admission is $5 per person. You are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Poteau Mayor Jeff Shockley and his grillin' team will be providing some local flavor cooking during the concert.
Gates open at 7 p.m.

Benefit for local hero battling cancer

Dustin Ester, 40, returned to LeFlore County recently to be close to he and his wife's family after she was diagnosed with Lupus. Dustin's wife, Delana Luman Ester, is in need of close family care during so the move to be near her parents seemed the best.
Dustin and Delana and their two children Tyler, 16, and Logan, 14, moved to Heavener and two months later, Dustin was diagnosed with cancer. He has since undergone six cycles of chemotherapy and 18 radiation treatments.
Dustin is a veteran of the Gulf War were he served aboard the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk as a fire fighter.

Local business holding youth rally / kid fair

Children of all ages are invited to participate in a kids fair / youth rally Saturday Aug. 11 from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. at the Strike A-Lot bowling alley in Poteau.
The event is free to the public and will include inflatable slides and mazes along with free bowling and lazer tag. There will also be live music provided by eight local christian bands.
A percent of a proceeds from the sale of food and drinks will benefit the Women's Crisis Services of LeFlore County.
Parents must be present with children.

Multiple fire departments keep forest fire under control

Multiple agencies responded to a house fire Tuesday afternoon that soon spread to nearby timber threatening hundreds of acres of forestry and nearby homes.
Summerfield , Fanshawe, Leflore and Post Mountain Fire Departments responded to the blaze and with the assistance of the U.S. Forestry helicopter who supplied large aerial water drops the blaze was contained.
According to sources, the cause of the fire was an electrical box attached to the outside of the home.
No one was injured in the fire.

Storms cause damage and power outage

As strong storms moved across the area Wednesday afternoon more than 1,400 OG&E customers found themselves without electricity.
Poteau saw the brunt of damages along the southern side of town with trees blown down along Morris and Church Streets and a metal building blown onto its top at Dunn Rite Custom Buildings on South Broadway.
According to Michael Davidson, a downburst is possibly to blame for the damages. Wind gusts up to 75 mph were recorded during the storm.

Man hospitalized after assaulted at local bar

A Poteau mam is free on bond after he beat a man with a pool stick in a case of mistaken identity.
Michael Todd Thompson, 48, of Poteau, was charged with assault and battery with great bodily injury Saturday after he allegedly beat Christopher Thomas, 38, in the head with a pool stick.
According to the arrest report, Thompson believed Thomas was another man who had set his parents rental property on fire. When Thomas left the bar, Thompson followed him and struck him multiple times.
