Awnings on the rise in Poteau

History is repeating itself as the former Hotel Lowrey, now home to the LeFlore County Museum gets a new look Tuesday with the placement of six awnings in original fashion above the top floor windows.
The awnings are part of the Adopt an Awning program through the LeFlore County Historical Society.
More awnings will be placed at a later date.

Lawsuit challenges Oklahoma law on abortion drugs

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A Tulsa medical clinic contends in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that an Oklahoma law set to take effect later this year further restricting the use of abortion-inducing drugs in the state is an unconstitutional violation of a woman's right to choose to end her pregnancy and should be declared void.

The petition was filed in Oklahoma County District Court on behalf of Reproductive Services, a clinic that provides both surgical and medication-induced abortions.

BREAKING NEWS: Charges declined in shooting death

The LeFlore County District Attorney's Office announced Monday there would be no criminal charges filed against a man involved in the August shooting death of his stepson.
Mark Wiles, 49, of Shady Point, allegedly shot 21-year-old Doug Byrd during an altercation in Wiles' front yard.
Byrd later died from the gunshot wound in a Tulsa hospital.
According to the DÃ…'s office, Wiles was justified in his actions under Oklahoma's Stand Your Ground Law.

Another call for Superintendent Barresi to resign

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The president of the Oklahoma PTA has joined in calling for the resignation of state school Superintendent Janet Barresi.

Jeffery Corbett said Friday that Barresi "has continued to erode the relationship between the State Department of Education and the school boards, administrators, teachers and parents of Oklahoma's public schools."

Corbett's call comes a day after State Board of Education member Leo Baxter and Republican state Rep. Jason Smalley both called for Barresi to resign.

Police: Woman beheaded at Oklahoma workplace

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A man fired from an Oklahoma food processing plant beheaded a woman with a knife and was attacking another worker when he was shot and wounded by a company official, police said Friday.

Moore Police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis says police are waiting until the 30-year-old man is conscious to arrest him in Thursday's attack and have asked the FBI to help investigate after co-workers at Vaughan Foods told authorities that he recently started trying to convert several employees to Islam.
