Nyla M. Shepherd, 92, of Fort Smith, Ark., formerly of Poteau, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, in Fort Smith.
Nyla was born Dec. 8, 1920 in Sallisaw to John and Ellie (Head) Shepherd. She was a bookkeeper. Nyla was a devout Catholic. She was a member of the Franciscan Order in New Orleans, 3rd Order. She received the honor of being Volunteer of the Year in New Orleans for her work with the homeless. She lived to serve her God and her church.
Retha Sue Dorey, 74, of Poteau died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, in Poteau. Sue was born July 22, 1939 in Idabel to Marvin and Floy (Matthews) Whittington. She was a licensed practical nurse. Sue was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jack Whittington.
Marie Cagle, 89, of Heavener died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, in Heavener. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at Dowden Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery.
Mary Jo Collins, 66, of Spiro died Monday. Aug. 5, 2013. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8., at Victory Worship Center, Spiro, burial will be in New Hope Cemetery.
Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.
Charley F. Fields, 81, of Heavener, formerly of Sallisaw, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, in Heavener.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, in the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Ark. Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Dowden Funeral Home, Heavener.
Earnestine King, 87, of Wister died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, in Poteau. Services will be held at a later date in Jolley Cemetery, Union County, Ark.
Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener is handling arrangements.
Shirley Jane Green, 67, of Fort Smith, formerly of Poteau, died July 29, in Fort Smith.

Helen Gaskin, a longtime organist at two Durant churches, died July 31, 2013, after a brief illness. She was 93.
Born Helen Isom on May 15, 1920, in McAlester, she was the daughter of Roy and Carrie Isom, who owned a grocery store in nearby Crowder.
Introduced to music by her mother, who was a church organist at First Baptist in Crowder, Helen began playing piano at church on Sundays when she was 11 years old.
In 1938, shortly after a fondly remembered senior trip to Tulsa to see Bob Wills perform at the famous Cainâ€™s Ballroom, she married her high school sweetheart, J.M. Gaskin.
Woodrow Wilson â€śWoodyâ€ť Turman Jr., formerly of Poteau, died peacefully after a short illness on Aug. 1, 2013.
Joyce Ann McCauley-Himes, 39, of Cove Ark., died Monday, July 29, 2013, in Hot Springs, Ark.
She was born Dec. 26, 1973, in Staton, Ore, to Tommy McCauley and Joyce (McCauley) Wilson. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Allen and Perl McCauley and Arthur and Elizabeth Morrison; father, Tommy Wayne McCauley; and brother, Donnie Gene Underwood.
