Joyce Harper Whisenant, 86, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in Tulsa to William Percy Harper and Moselle Price Harper.
Joyce grew up in Poteau, where she met her future husband, William E. â€śWhizâ€ť Whisenant. She graduated with a degree in journalism from Oklahoma A&M University and was a member of Chi Omega.
Estel â€śLuckyâ€ť Self, 66, of Spiro died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, Oct. 9, at Old Cache Cemetery, Cartersville, under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.
Violet Marie Whitmire Hobbs, 95, of Poteau died Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at Heavener Nursing Home.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Evans and Miller Funeral Home, 411 Dewey Ave., Poteau.
Billy Dean Earls, 77, of Poteau died Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, in Poteau. He was born March 28, 1937, in Heavener to Lester and Betty Jo (Berry) Earls. He was a barber.Â
Billy is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Brian Earls; brother Lee Earls; and sister, Helen Earls.
Matha Ann Odom, 80, of Poteau died Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Matha was born July 28, 1934, in Latham to John G. and Lois (Sulivant) Bowden. She was a retired secretary for the county superintendent of schools. Matha was a faithful member of Southside Baptist Church. She loved to play card games (Hand and Foot). Matha was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved spending time with her kids and grandkids. She was always there when you needed her.
Dale Sanders, 93, of Poteau died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, in Poteau. William was born March 22, 1921, in Fanshawe to Snowden and Addie (Thurman) Sanders. William owned and operated a grocery store and service station in Buffalo Valley and Summerfield. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Marvin and Eldred Sanders; and sister, Juanita Gwin.
Rhonda Owens, 46, of Heavener died Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Services were held Monday, Oct. 6, at First Baptist Church in Heavener. Burial was in Conser Cemetery under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home.
Brexton Oakley Francis of Spiro was born and passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, 2014, in Oklahoma City.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Spiro City Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.
Larry Wayne Monks, 64, of Tulsa, formerly of Panama died Sept. 23, 2014, in Tulsa. Larry was born at Tahona to Bill and Eveline Monks on July 6, 1950. He attended Panama Schools, Eastern Oklahoma State College at Wilburton and graduated from Oklahoma State University at Stillwater with an electrical engineering degree and with additional degrees from Louisiana State University. Major degrees were coal-fired generation and nuclear generation. Larry enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing with Lawrence Williamson of Panama, his friend for many years.
Bobbie Jo Montgomery, 54, of Poteau died Sept. 25, 2014, in Poteau.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Vaughn Cemetery, Gilmore, under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home.Â
