Launa Belle Turner of Poteau died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. She was born Jan. 19, 1934, in Bokoshe to Jacob Louis and Ola Belle (Peerson) Cloud. She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and devoted Jehovahâ€™s Witness.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doyle Gene Turner; two sons, Danny Gene Turner and Timothy Wesley Turner; two brothers; a sister; and a great-grandson.
Richard Allen Hawthorne of Shady Point died Dec. 22, 2012, in Shady Point. Richard was born Dec. 29, 1935, in Jenny Lind, Ark., to Richard W. and Grace Reynolds (Myers) Hawthorne. He was retired from the U.S. Navy. Richard was a member of the First Step of Faith Church in Poteau.Â Â
Survivors include his wife, Jacletia of the home; daughter, Karen Hawthorne of the home; sons, Rick Hawthorne of Paris, Texas, and Willie Hawthorne of Dixon, Calif.; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister, Doris Clifton; and brother, Donald Hawthorne of Shady Point; other relatives and loved ones.
Daryl Eugene Todd, 63, of Spiro died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. He was born March 22, 1949, at Riverside, Calif., to Gordon and Virginia (Chrisenbery) Todd. He was a self-employed hoof trimmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dennis Byrd; and one sister, Tammy Ybanez.
Carolyn Sue Troxler, 69, of Panama died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, in Panama.
She was born April 1, 1943, in Martha to Earl â€śBudâ€ť and Mildred (Callen) Moody.Â She was a homemaker, a loving mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jimmie Moody.
Christopher Edward Grindstaff, 25, of Poteau died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, in Baton Rouge, La.
Chris was born Feb. 5, 1987, in Oklahoma City to Bruce and Diana (Johnson) Grindstaff. Chris was a fire alarm technician with J.E. Systems in Pocola. He was an Eagle Scout, Troop 30 in Poteau. Chris lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed every experience along the way. He loved his family and friends and he found a friend in everyone he met. Chris was preceded in death by his grandfather, Kenneth Johnson, and uncle, Todd Grindstaff.
Lorene â€śReneâ€ť Jones was born March 10, 1923, in Glendale in LeFlore County. She passed away peacefully with family at her side Dec. 25, 2012, in Gridley, Calif.
Lorene was a loving and giving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend. She was known for her homemade buttermilk biscuits with white and chocolate gravy. She was an avid gardener who loved canning her homegrown fruits and vegetables. She was a gifted quilter and made beautiful quilts for all her loved ones.Â Â
Earl Curry was born Feb. 6, 1935. to Isaac Frenzella â€śI.F.â€ť and Myrtle (Ellis) Curry in Fisk, Mo. He graduated to glory on Jan. 2, 2013, at the age of 77 years, 10 months, and 27 days at his home in Wister.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George Isaac, Elmo and wife Virginia, and Tolbert and wife Mary; brother-in-law, Ernest Walker; and sister-in-law Fannie Lou Curry. Earl was an elder of the Poteau Church of Christ. He worked for LeFlore County for 15 years; he was a carpenter for more than 40 years. He finished the 10th grade in Depoyster School in Missouri.

Jay P. Shelton, 89, of Shady Point died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, in Pocola.Â

Ileen M. Newby, 93, of Fanshawe died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, in Poteau.Â
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the Free Will Baptist Church in Fanshawe. Burial will be in Fanshawe Cemetery. The family will be at the Evans and Miller Funeral Home from 5-7Â Tuesday to visit with relatives and friends.
Abbott Barnes â€śHapâ€ť Sykes, age 87, of Odessa, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at home on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, after a short illness preceded by a severe stroke on Aug. 24, 2004. He lost his ability to converse but remained upbeat and cheerful.
The youngest of nine children, Hap was born to Abbott Barnes Sykes Sr., and Samantha Taylor Sykes in Barber, Ark. He was raised mostly by his sisters following the death of his mother when he was 2 years old and attended country schools near Panama.
