The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team took the first step in making it to next week's Class 4A State Tournament.
The Lady Pirates handled the Stilwell Lady Indians 8-3 Wednesday afternoon to make it to Wednesday night's winner's-bracket final against the Fort Gibson Lady Tigers (25-10), who defeated the Broken Bow Lady Savages 7-0 in Game 2 Wednesday afternoon.
â€śIt was a long wait,â€ť Poteau Coach Misty Collins said.
The winner of Wednesday night's Poteau-Fort Gibson game will advance to this afternoon's title game at 2 p.m., with the if-game at 4 p.m.
It looked like last week, the Poteau Pirates were going to snatch a win away from the jaws of defeat last Friday night against Tulsa Webster. Instead, the Warriors scored in the waning moments to snatch the win away from Poteau. Needless to say, the Pirates were very disappointed.
An old adage says, â€śTo be the best, you have to beat the best.â€ť The Panama Lady Razorbacks softball team hopes to have that saying become reality today.
The Lady â€™Backs (25-9) will meet No. 1 Colbert at 5 p.m. today at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City in the Class 2A State Tournament quarterfinals.
For the fourth straight baseball season, dating back to the 2010 spring season, the Wister Wildcats baseball team has ended them at the same place â€” the state tournament.
Last spring, the â€™Cats made third time the charm as they won the Class 2A State Tournament. Now, they will look to win the Class A Fall State Tournament this weekend.
First up for the Wildcats (21-3) is the Amber-Pocasset Panthers at 5 p.m. today at Edmond Memorial High School in the state quarterfinals.
The Spiro Bulldogs not only snapped their three-game losing streak last week in a 34-19 win over the Eufaula Ironheads last Friday night at McClain Stadium, but they also may have salvaged their season.
But to keep their postseason hopes alive, the â€™Dogs (2-3 overall, 1-1 in District 3A-8 play) will need to keep the momentum going when they hit the road for a 7:30 p.m. Friday game against the Hugo Buffaloes (1-4, 0-2) â€” who lost last week's 3A-8 contest 21-0 to Atoka.
