The young felines from Howe came out much like their bigger sisters, the varsity Lady Lions, and dominated the Roland Lady Rangers by the score of 30-14 in the opening round of the Poteau Freshmen Tournament Tuesday at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
However, the news was not as great for the host Lady Pirates, as they lost 32-24 in the other opening round game on Tuesday.
In boys' games, Roland defeated Sallisaw 49-36, while Fort Gibson routed Stigler 66-32.
VAN BUREN, Ark. â€” The host Van Buren (Ark.) Pointers proved to be too much for the Poteau Pirates in their season opener Tuesday night in the Citizens Bank Classic with a 64-39 victory.
The Pirates (1-0) played Wednesday night in the consolation semifinals against Morrilton, Ark., with the winner playing for the consolation championship at 2:30 p.m. Saturday while the loser will play for seventh place at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Pocola 55, Stigler 47: In Stigler, down 14-11 after one period, the Indians (1-0) outscored the Panthers 22-8 in the second quarter to take a 33-22 halftime lead.
VAN BUREN, Ark. â€” A combination of turnovers and a poor-shooting game spelled doom for the Poteau Lady Pirates in their season opener Tuesday afternoon in the Citizens Bank Classic as they lost 59-35 to Shiloh Christian in the opening round.
The Lady Pirates (0-1) got a bye into Saturday afternoon's consolation championship.
Bokoshe 79, Kinta 36: In Kinta, one night after a struggling-but-winning performance at Cameron, the Lady Tigers (3-0) were in rare form Tuesday night. Bokoshe jumped out to a 24-9 lead after one period and never looked back.
Two LeFlore County schools' basketball teams will open their 2011-12 seasons against one another tonight.
The Heavener teams will visit the Spiro squads for games at 6:30 p.m. (girls) and 8 p.m. (boys) at the Spiro Gym.
The Panama High School basketball teams will be among the final LeFlore County teams to begin their 2011-12 season tonight when they entertain their archrivals from Pocola, with the girls' game at 6:30 p.m. and the boys' contest at 8 p.m.
WARNER â€” Behind dominating play on both ends of the floor, the Connors State College Cowboys won 81-51 over the Carl Albert State College Vikings in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference Tuesday night.
Behind a 20-point halftime lead, the Cowgirls won 88-54 over the Lady Vikings in the opening game on Tuesday night.
The next games for the Lady Vikings will be this weekend in the Lady Viking Classic in Hillsboro, Mo. They will play Southeastern Illinois at 7 p.m. Saturday and the Maryville (Mo.) University junior varsity at noon Sunday.
