Durant Rangers handle Elk City Brown Sox

The Durant Rangers used late-inning offense to end up winning going away to open the 2011 OK Kids Midget State Tournament Tuesday afternoon at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
The Rangers ended up being too much for the Elk City Brown Sox in a 12-3 win.
The Rangers (42-6) will play the Shawnee Muck Dogs at 8 p.m. tonight in a winner's-bracket contest, while the Brown Sox (47-8) will play an elimination contest at 4 p.m. this afternoon against the Kingfisher ’Jackets.

Poteau, a logical place for an OK Kids State Tournament

When Poteau was named the 2011 OK Kids Midget State Tournament host city, it just seemed a natural fit.
Tournament-host Poteau Pirates Coach Dr. Steve Smith said that what may have helped in Poteau landing this summer's state tournament was the success enjoyed by four LeFlore County OK Kids teams last year.
Panama's team won last summer's OK Kids Midget State Tournament.
The Wister Wildcats were the state runners-up in the 2010 Preps State Tournament. They are also there this season, and they won their state opener 8-6 Tuesday afternoon in McLoud.

Skills Competition set for this morning

Monday night was the Major League Baseball All-Star Game's Home Run Derby. This morning, several youth will get to participate in one, and then some.
The Skills Competition, which will include a home run derby, a pitching competition and a base-running competition, will take place beginning at 11 a.m. this morning at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
The pitching competition is to see who can throw the fastest pitch, while the base-running competition will see who is the fastest from second base to home plate.

Poteau Legion baseball team's home games against Muskogee canceled; games took place last month

The Poteau American Legion AAA baseball team's home doubleheader against Muskogee did not happen Monday night in Wister.
It was determined that when Muskogee could not make this date, it decided to play the game in late June.
So, the next games for Poteau (15-14), which has lost four straight games, will be its regular-season twinbill finale against Okmulgee in Wister.
The games are slated for 4 p.m. Friday, but Poteau Coach Shain Turnipseed that the games may be moved to Sunday afternoon.
As of press time, the games were still set for Friday afternoon.

Six two-golfer teams win titles at Spider Webb Invitational; Individual hits hole-in-one, earning $2,500 for feat

Six two-golfer teams won titles at this past weekend's Spider Webb Invitational at Choctaw Country Club.
Brad Risenhoover and Levi Molini won the championship flight with a two-day score of 63-65—128. Randall Wheat and John Spikes were second (66-63—129), while Jerry Holton and Kale Holton (61-71—132) won third place in a scorecard playoff with Zac Pool and Travis Warner (65-67—132).
In the president's flight, Lyle Whitworth and Lance Sconyers took first place (65-67—132), followed by Ronnie Burgess and Jon Sullivan (70-68—138) and Brian Roberts and Kevin Traywick (70-68—138).
