As you all know, the last weekend of August, The Poteau Daily News puts out the annual LeFlore County Gridiron Preview, previewing all eight county high school football teams — plus some more items for your enjoyment this season.

Poteau girls outlast Red Oak to win Lady ’Back Classic

PANAMA — The title game of the 2011 Lady ’Back Classic was supposed to have been decided Saturday night. It was not — it ended up being decided EARLY Sunday morning.
At 12:55 a.m. Sunday, the Poteau Lady Pirates finally got past the Red Oak Lady Eagles to win the championship. After Red Oak forced the second title game with a 3-0 victory to hand the Lady Pirates their first loss of the season, Poteau responded with a 7-3 win in the second championship game.

WILBURTON — The weekend ended on a high note for the Arkoma Lady Mustangs as they won fourth place in the Robbers Cave Shootout with an 8-5 win over Haileyville Saturday morning.
Heavener 6, Broken Bow 3; Heavener 6, Wright City 1: Friday in Broken Bow, the Lady Wolves (8-2) broke a 3-3 tie with the host Lady Savages with a three-run seventh inning, with Amber Holt's two-out, two-RBI single providing the game-winning runs.
Editor's Note — Nothing was reported on Howe's games in the Robbers Cave Shootout or Talihina's games in the Healdton Festival.

EL RENO — Last May when the Wister Wildcats and Dale Pirates met, it was for the Class 2A State Tournament championship, which was won by the ’Cats 4-2. The same two teams met again Saturday for the finals of the Tournament of Champions at Redlands Community College, and the Pirates avenged the loss.
Dale scored twice in the eighth inning to break a 6-6 tie to win the game 8-6 in eight innings.
Wister (5-1) reached the title game as they outlasted Coleman 13-9 in Friday's semifinals in a battle of Wildcats.

Poteau looks sharp in first football scrimmage

CATOOSA — The Poteau Pirates hit the road Friday night to take part in a triangular-controlled football scrimmage against the Catoosa Indians, a Class 4A power that made it all the way into the state semifinal last year, and the Class 6A Tulsa Memorial Chargers.
The scrimmages were formatted where each team would face one of the other two teams in a 15-play series.

First scrimmage for Spiro Bulldogs shows team needs more 'discipline'

SPIRO — The one word Spiro Bulldogs Football Coach Chris Bunch said after Friday night's first scrimmage of the preseason against the Checotah Wildcats at McClain Stadium was “discpline” — and not in a positive way.
Bunch believes that his players were not as disciplined as needed to perform well on the gridiron. In Friday night's scrimmage, the ‘Cats threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another TD.

Pocola looks good in first football scrimmage of 2011 preseason

POCOLA — The Pocola Indians had their first scrimmage of the preseason Friday night at John Carter Field facing the Gore Pirates.They did not dissappoint, finding the end zone three times to only the Pirates' one.
The Indian defense came out fired up, causing three turnovers in Gore's first 20 plays, highlighted by Dakota Highley's interception on the fifth play of the scrimmage. In fact, the Pirates only gained six yards in their first 10 plays.

ARKOMA — Last year, the Arkoma Mustangs' defense gave up 598 points last season. If Friday night's home scrimmage is any indication, things will be vastly different in 2011.
The Mustangs did not give up a score to the Canadian Cougars in Friday night's first scrimmage of the preseason.
