SPIRO — This year, the opposing teams of Heavener and Spiro squared off in football purely on a scrimmage basis. Heavener is in Class 2A and Spiro is in 3A. Next year, they will be in the same district, and will face each other later in year when the stakes will be considerably larger.
PANAMA — First-Year Panama Razorbacks Football Coach Brandon Ellis saw some good things in his team's final preseason scrimmage against the Warner Eagles Friday night at George Ollie Stadium.
In fact, no more had everyone gotten settled when the Hogs made some noise offensively. Quarterback Trevor Bourne hit Isaac Burris on a 62-yard touchdown play, which proved to be the only score the Razorbacks had on the night.
STIGLER — The word that Pocola Football Coach Rick Lang described Friday night's final preseason scrimmage at Stigler was inconsistent.
“We couldn't get much consistency going offensively,” Lang said about his offensive unit, which did not score on the night. “We looked good moving the ball. I was pleased with the kids about that. But consistency was what we lacked Friday night. I didn't play my starting quarterback (Devon Johnson) because he has a problem with his back."

It's always my desire to be different. So, when I was creating this year's LeFlore County Gridiron Preview special section, the first thing I wanted to do was have a different cover photo, and then some. I wanted it to be eye-appealing and catchy.
Then, I wanted to add some things which were not in last year's LeFlore County Gridiron Preview. The obvious one is the story about the new district changes and realignments handed out by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association for the next two seasons.
TAHLEQUAH — Both Poteau Pirates Coaches Jeff Broyle and Andy Perdue had nothing but praise for the scrimmage last week in Catoosa. Both said that they were "proud of the way that the Pirates played (Thursday) against Tahlequah and Miami.”
Up until the last Poteau defensive series, the Poteau defense allowed only 20 yards for three sets of plays.
BROKEN ARROW — If Arkoma Mustangs Football Coach Mark Weatherton would have handed out a grade to his team in Thursday night's four-way scrimmage against host Summit Christian, Dewar and Welch, he likely would have awarded his squad an “A.”
“I'm very pleased with the way we played,” Weatherton said. “We went down there against three Class B teams, and we competed well. Welch is really good, and we stuck right with them.”
Each team went 10 minutes on offense and 10 minutes on defense against the other three teams.
Two of the three LeFlore County teams in the 16th annual Carl Albert Fall Baseball Classic opened the day with wins Thursday.
At Carl Albert State College's Ival Goodman Field, the Wister Wildcats run ruled the Okay Mustangs 14-1 in six innings, while the Cameron Yellowjackets did likewise to the McCurtain Bulldogs by a score of 11-1.
At Howe's Lions Field, the co-host Howe Lions lost 8-0 to the Red Oak Eagles, while Crowder Demons run ruled the Smithville Braves 12-4 in five innings.
WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Bulldogs baseball team could not have started play in its own Whitesboro Tournament any better than it did Thursday night.
The ’Dogs handled the Eagletown eagles 19-1 in the opening round of the tournament.
The Bulldogs (3-6) played Battiest Friday night for the right to play in this afternoon's title game at 4 p.m. The Whitesboro-Battiest loser will play for third place at 2 p.m. this afternoon.
CALVIN — The Leflore Savages have a shot at being at .500 by this afternoon.
The Savages routed the Pittsburg Panthers 24-6 Friday afternoon in the consolation semifinals of the Calvin Tournament.
The Savages (3-4), who lost their opener 17-6 to Varnum Thursday night, will play Wanette at noon this afternoon for the consolation championship.
OKTAHA — The Heavener Lady Wolves went 2-1 on the first day of the Oktaha Tournament, beating Vian 5-1 and Warner 8-0 before losing to the host Lady Tigers by a score of 9-1.
The Lady Wolves (12-3), who played in a home three-way on Friday with Keys (Park Hill) and Coalgate, will play Sallisaw at 11 a.m. and Locust Grove at 12:30 p.m. today in the Oktaha Tournament. How they do in these two games will determine who their third game will be against and for what place.
