The top two seeds, the Poteau Lady Pirates and the Spiro Lady Bulldogs, are where the seeding would suggest for the 2011 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament — the winner's-bracket final.
Tuesday night at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex, the Lady Pirates run ruled the Heavener Lady Wolves 10-0 in one winner's-bracket semifinal, while the Lady Bulldogs held off the Panama Lady Razorbacks 3-2 in the other semifinal.
Poteau (22-3) and Spiro (16-4) were slated to meet Wednesday night with the winner finding themselves in tonight's championship game at 7 p.m.
The Heavener Lady Wolves survived being forced to two title game by the Howe Lady Lions to win the 2011 LeFlore County Junior High Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament last week at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
After Howe won the first title game 2-0, Heavener came back to capture the winner-take-all title game 5-3 in a game which was called due to the time limit.
Heavener opened tournament play with a win over Leflore, then posted victories over Howe, Poteau and Wister to make it to the championship round.
After the Poteau Pirates routed the Idabel Warriors 42-7 last week for their first road football win of the 2011 season, it put the Pirates at 2-0. Such a start could not have been any better, according to senior outside linebacker Jake McMillin.
“It's a big deal,” he said. “I like it. Things are way better than they were last year. Last year, I felt like we weren't going to have a chance to be any good. This year, I feel something coming on. We just have to keep working hard each week, and hope for the best — maybe even the playoffs. We just need to keep getting better each week.”
WISTER — The Wister Wildcats baseball team keeps rolling along. The ’Cats run ruled the Smithville Braves 12-0 Tuesday afternoon.
Red Oak 8, Cameron 3: In Cameron, the Yellowjackets (14-7) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning.
The game stayed that way until the fifth inning when the Eagles tied the game at 2-2, then scored six runs in the sixth to take an 8-2 lead.
One of my former students, Wyatt McBride, and his grandfather, Floyd Smith, had them one heck of a day of catfishing back on Father’s Day.
They caught a good mess of fish, so they had a fish fry. There is nothing like taking kids fishing or hunting, and I will never get tired of that smile that they have when they are successful.
