Poteau girls hold off Spiro

September 2, 2011

When the Poteau Lady Pirates and the Spiro Lady Bulldogs met in last month's Lady ’Back Classic in Panama, it was a hard-fought, 2-1 victory for Poteau.
When the two teams met again Thursday afternoon, it was another hard-fought game — this time with more runs, and more miscues for both teams.
The Lady Pirates held off the Lady Bulldogs 5-4 in a game in which the other team's defensive miscues led to more of the nine total runs scoring than base hits.

“It's going pretty slow right now,” Arkoma Coach Mark Weatherton said on Tuesday. “I keep waking up, thinking it's Friday — but it's not. It's something that we've been looking forward to. The kids are real excited. I'm just as excited to get it going. But it's dragging right now.”

Bokoshe Tigers to finally see some game action, welcome Porum to begin new season

September 2, 2011

So far, the Bokoshe Tigers football team has not had as much time on the field as first-year Coach Tyler Massey would like.
First of all, school did not begin until Aug. 24, and until school began not all the players were at preseason practices. In fact, the Tigers did not even have a preseason scrimmage, where most, if not all, teams had two.
Tonight's season opener against Porum at 7:30 p.m. at home will be the first game-like situation in which the Tigers will have participated this season.

Poteau girls awarded top seed for LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Tournament

Based upon those facts, the Lady Pirates were named the top seed for this season's LeFlore County Tournament, which will be Sept. 12-15 at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
Four teams received byes into the winner's-bracket quarterfinals. Along with Poteau, getting byes were second-seed Spiro, third-seed Panama and fourth-seed Panama.
As last year, there will only be 12 teams in the field, instead of the usual 13 — but there is a change.
