Miscues spell defeat for Pirates as Gravette wins; 'Red Out' happening next week in District 4A-4 opener against Hilldale

Count ’em — 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. That is how many turnovers the Poteau Pirates had in Friday night's contest at Costner Stadium against the Gravette Lions, who are ranked eighth in Class 4A in Arkansas. A team could not beat an average or sub-par team with those numbers, much less a team of the Lions' caliber. In the end, the Lions left town 31-16 victors.

Strong second half leads Talihina to win at home

TALIHINA — After being away from Doc Robinson Stadium for about a month since their first preseason scrimmage in the third week of August, the Talihina Golden Tigers presented their fans with a home-opening win Friday night.
After the game was tied at 7-7, the Golden Tigers outscored Sallisaw-Central 33-0 in the second half to roll past the Tigers 40-7.

Arkoma gets tough road win against SW Christian

NORMAN — The Arkoma Mustangs are wanting to be a championship team this football season, and Friday night they might have just taken a big step toward that.
The Mustangs defeated Southwest Christian 26-18 to improve to 3-0.

Late interception returned for TD lifts Pocola over Quinton

QUINTON — Pocola Coach Rick Lang was calling Friday night's game with the Quinton Savages a “mission-statement win” if the Indians could get it — and they did.
Colton Hamm's 40-yard interception return for a touchdown with about four minutes left to play, then Cody Young caught the two-point conversion pass, as the Indians rallied to down the Savages 15-14 in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Webbers Falls too much for Bokoshe

BOKOSHE — The Bokoshe Tigers were hoping the third time would be the charm Friday night in getting their new football coach, Tyler Massey, his first win. Unfortunately for the locals, it did not happen.
The Webbers Falls Warriors, who suffered a 40-14 loss last week to Class C's fourth-ranked Covington-Douglas Wildcats, took out their frustration on the Tigers as they won their District C-4 opener by a score of 56-0.

Late turnover costly to Spiro in home loss to Roland Rangers

SPIRO — In a defensive contest that left both teams scoreless for most the game Friday night at McClain Stadium, the Roland Rangers pulled a last-minute upset against the Spiro Bulldogs when they caught an interception late in the fourth quarter which led to a field goal in the final 27 seconds of the game bringing the final score 10-7 in Roland's favor.

Heavener suffers shutout on road against Paris, Ark.

PARIS, Ark. — The Heavener Wolves were hoping to equal last season's win total Friday night in their final non-district game of the 2011 season. The host team had other ideas.
Paris proved to be too much for the Wolves in a 50-0 setback.

Gore beats former coach, Panama

GORE — The Panama Razorbacks gave up their 13th loss in a row Friday night after they were blanked by the Gore Pirates by a score of 33-0. The game marked the return to Gore for new Panama Coach Brandon Ellis, who was trying to beat his former team.

Poteau freshmen lose to Mena, but PKMS teams victorious Thursday night

Two of the local football teams who played Thursday night at Costner Stadium were winners.
The Pansy Kidd Middle School eighth-grade and seventh-grade team posted wins over Mena, Ark., but the Poteau Pirate freshmen team suffered a loss.
Prior to the Pirates losing 21-6 to Mena, the PKMS eighth-grade Raiders won 35-12 while the seventh-grade Raiders posted a 20-6 victory.

BOKOSHE — After suffered a two-and-out at the 2011 LeFlore County Tournament, the Leflore Lady Savages bounced back to post a 9-5 road win over the Bokoshe Lady Tigers Thursday afternoon.
Howe 12, Buffalo Valley 10: At Buffalo Valley, the Lady Lions (14-16) rallied from a 9-5 deficit with a seven-run seventh inning to get the win.
McCurtain 8, Arkoma 2; McCurtain 18, Arkoma 12, 8 inn.: In Arkoma, the Lady Bulldogs took a pair from the Lady Mustangs (7-15) on Thursday.
