SPIRO — Both Spiro High School basketball teams advanced to the semifinals of the 80th LeFlore County Tournament Tuesday night at the Spiro Gym. But needless to say, just barely.
The Bulldogs scored late to down the Howe Lions 50-48 in the final game of the night in quarterfinal action, which came after the Lady Bulldogs also scored in the waning seconds to down the Poteau Lady Pirates 45-44.
Two other county teams also made it to the semifinals. The Wister Wildcats beat the Cameron Yellowjackets 53-38, while the Bokoshe Lady Tigers defeated defending LCT champion Heavener 43-39.
HEAVENER — All the top seeds were victorious in Tuesday night's championship quarterfinal games of the 80th LeFlore County Tournament played at the Heavener Gym.

The postseason has arrived for the Poteau Pirates wrestling team. The Pirates will be in the Class 4A District Duals beginning at 5 p.m. today in Wagoner.
“We're real anxious,” second-year Poteau Coach Chris Barbee said. “This is what we've been working toward all season. We've kind of had our ups and downs, but we're kind of coming into this on an upswing (two dual wins last Thursday against Fort Smith (Ark.) Southside and Talihina). We're looking for good things.”
VIAN — The good news for the Talihina Golden Tigers wrestling team was it got its first dual win, beating Keys (Park Hill) 54-30 during the Class 2A District Duals on Tuesday.
The not-so-good news was the Golden Tigers suffered losses in their other three duals on the day, losing to host Vian 78-6, Sequoyah-Tahlequah 42-36 and Quinton 42-30. Just 24 hours before, the Golden Tigers posted a win over Sequoyah-Tahlequah
The Golden Tigers (1-6 in duals this season) will finish their district dual competition at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hulbert.
If you have a chance, come out and watch some of the Leflore County Tournament this weekend. It is a good chance to watch our area youth battling it out on the hardwood. Wister’s boys are in the semifinals for the first time since 1994 (at least that is when Jerry Carpenter and I decided). That is the year when some of my junior high players’ dads were playing.
Good luck boys!
