When a team is the host for an event, that team would like to have some success in front of the home fans. The Poteau Pirates wrestling team did a pretty good job of accomplishing that goal this past weekend.
Two Pirates won titles and eight total wrestlers placed at the 2012 Maverick Conference Tournament at Carl Albert State College's Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
In the high school division, Poteau's Tyler Tustin won the 132-pound title. After being second best in last year's conference tournament, coming in first made the weekend complete.
SALLISAW â€” The Poteau High School basketball teams split their road games Friday night against Sallisaw's teams.
The Pirates made the Black Diamonds walk the plank in a 39-26 victory, but the Lady Black Diamonds mined a 51-32 win over the Lady Pirates.
ARKOMA â€” The Howe High School basketball teams got a sweep of the Arkoma squads Friday night at the Arkoma Gym.
The Lady Lions had a tussle for about 2.5 quarters before using their 14 3-point baskets to enable them to pull away for a 72-49 win over the Lady Mustangs.
In the boys' game, the Lions proved to be too much for the Mustangs as Howe beat Arkoma 57-34.
CAMERON â€” The Cameron Yellowjackets earned a share of the 2011-12 Green Valley Conference championship with a 57-51 win over the McCurtain Bulldogs Friday night at the Cameron Gym.
The win for the Yellowjackets, coupled with Wister's loss to Keota Friday night, gave the â€™Jackets a share of the Green Valley Conference title with the Wildcats.
CAMERON â€” Lady Luck returned to the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets.
Tasha Janway's buzzer-beating 3-point basket lifted the Lady â€™Jackets to a 43-41 come-from-behind win over the McCurtain Lady Bulldogs Friday night at the Cameron Gym.
The win gave the Cameron girls their second win of the season.
Heavener 54, Hartshorne 46: In Heavener, the Lady Wolves jumped out to a 10-6 lead after one period and never relinquished the advantage.
The Class 2A, 3A and 4A district playoff assignments will be announced, likely Thursday afternoon, by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.
As is customary, there will be two teams in each district in Class 3A and 4A.
While the games were closer than in December when the Poteau High School basketball teams played McAlester at Brumley Gym, unfortunately for the Pirates and Lady Pirates the outcomes were the same Thursday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
The Pirates suffered a 60-58 loss to the Buffaloes, while the night began with the Lady Buffaloes beating the Lady Pirates 56-49.
LEFLORE â€” The Leflore Savages gave their coach, Todd Hackler, a nice birthday present Thursday night with a 49-12 win over the Bokoshe Tigers at the Leflore Gym.
Cameron 57, Gans 45: In Gans, in a game rescheduled from Nov. 18, 2011, due to the Grizzlies being in the Class B football playoffs, the Yellowjackets rallied from a 15-14 first-quarter deficit to get the come-from-behind win. The â€™Jackets outscored the Grizzlies 13-8 in the second quarter to take a 27-23 halftime lead. In the second half, Cameron outscored Gans 30-22 to preserve the road victory.
