CAMERON — The two favored teams to win titles in this past weekend's Class A District Tournament did just that.
The host Cameron Yellowjackets ended up flying right past the Clayton Bulldogs to win the boys' title game 57-40 Saturday night at the Cameron Gym.
In girls' championship game, the Arkoma Lady Mustangs also claimed the top prize with a 64-51 win over the Lady Bulldogs.
Clayton's teams reached Saturday night's title games by winning elimination games on Friday night, thus ending the seasons for two LeFlore County teams.
WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs claimed the top prize in the Class B District Tournament with a 46-36 win over Eagletown Eagles Saturday night at the Whitesboro Gym.
The Lady Bulldogs only had a 3-2 lead after the opening period, but they stretched their advantage to 17-12 at halftime.
After leading 27-22 after three periods, the Lady Bulldogs opened the final quarter with a 11-6 run to stretch their advantage to 10 points at 38-28 with 2:40 left to play to put the game away.
SPIRO — Third time was the charm for the Poteau Lady Pirates against the Spiro Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Pirates, who lost to the Lady Bulldogs at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse and in the LeFlore County Tournament earlier this season, finally got a win over the Lady Bulldogs as Poteau downed Spiro 46-33 Friday night at the Spiro Gym.
I guess we knew it was bound to happen at least once this season — games being snowed out.
Monday night's games on the hardwood were snowed out. Three of the match-ups were high school, Howe at Pocola, Porum at Panama and Stigler at Spiro. Also snowed out were Monday night's Carl Albert State College home games with Redlands Community College.
The Porum-Panama games were rescheduled for 6:30 and 8 p.m. tonight, while the CASC contests with Redlands were rescheduled for 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
The Howe-Pocola and Stigler-Spiro games will not be rescheduled.
McLOUD — Four Talihina High School wrestlers placed in the Metro Tournament on Saturday.
Bryan Young was runner-up at 220 pounds to be the highest place for the Golden Tigers.
Three other Golden Tigers came in fourth — Derek Lester (106 pounds), Brian Collins (182) and Caleb Blue (heavyweight).
The Golden Tigers will be in the Class 3A Regional Tournament Friday and Saturday in Inola. The Poteau Pirates will be in the Class 4A Regional Tournament the same two days in Cleveland. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to next week's state tournament.
WILBURTON — The Talihina Lady Golden Tigers used a strong defensive second half to down the Wilburton Lady Diggers 59-51 Friday night at the new Wilburton Gym.
Trailing 30-29 at halftime, the Lady Golden Tigers outscored the Lady Diggers 30-21 in the second half to get the come-from-behind win.
Defensively, Talihina held Wilburton's Courtney Medcalf to 14 total points, but kept her scoreless in the final period.
