OKLAHOMA CITY — Poteau Pirates Golf Coach Mike Thomas was hoping to get at least a sixth-place, or higher, team finish in the 2012 Class 4A State Tournament, which took place Monday and Tuesday at Lake Hefner North Golf Course. Unfortunately, his and the Pirates' wish did not come true.
The Pirates ended up 11th out of 12 teams in the field with a three-round team score of 948. After 36 holes on Monday, the Pirates were in 10th place with a 636, but had a team score of 312 on Tuesday — which was the best 18-hole performance of the tournament for the Pirates.
ARDMORE — While there was no LeFlore County high school track athlete who won a state title at the Class 3A-4A State Meet last weekend at Noble Stadium, one local trackster did very well.
Heavener long jumper Shaun Bradley placed third with a mark of 21-0.25 in the Class 3A Boys State Meet, and by so doing was invited to long jump at the Meet of Champions next Tuesday at Moore High School's Lions Stadium.
Bradley and Spiro's Todd Whitfield were the highest county placers. While Bradley was third in the 3A boys long jump, Whitfield placed third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.53 seconds).
WISTER — For the fifth straight baseball season, the Wister Wildcats baseball team is heading to state.
The Wildcats defeated the Hartshorne Miners 7-1 Friday night to win the Class 2A Regional Tournament.
The Wildcats (22-2) will meet Oktaha at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Oklahoma City's Dolese Park.
The Miners eliminated the Pocola Indians 4-2 in the loser's-bracket final.
In the title game, the ’Cats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening inning, thanks to a three-run home run by Caleb Hill.
EUFAULA — Last spring, it was the Eufaula Ironheads who spoiled the Spiro Bulldogs' chance to make state with a victory in the Class 3A Regional Tournament. This year, the ’Dogs returned the favor.
After the Ironheads defeated the Bulldogs 8-1 in Friday night's first title game, the ’Dogs prevailed 2-1 in Saturday's winner-take-all Class 3A Regional Tournament championship game to make state.
The Bulldogs (22-11) will take on Verdigris at this week's Class 3A State Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Thursday Edmond Memorial High School.
Then, there were two. The Wister Wildcats (Class 2A) and Spiro Bulldogs (Class 3A) will represent LeFlore County at state later this week.
The Wildcats will play Oktaha at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Oklahoma City's Dolese Park, while the Bulldogs will face Verdigris at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Edmond Memorial High School.

The regular season ended the best possible way for the Carl Albert State College baseball team Saturday afternoon at Ival Goodman Field.
The Vikings swept a home doubleheader from the Redlands Community College Cougars by scores of 5-1 and 6-5.
Three Carl Albert baseball players got great news on Monday. Johnson, Cummings and Red Oak freshman pitcher Dwight Camp were named to not only the All-Region II Baseball Team but the All-Region II Gold Glove Team.
OKLAHOMA CITY — It was a short, and heartbreaking, stay at the Region II Tournament for the Carl Albert State College softball team.
The Lady Vikings saw their season end with a pair of losses Friday at Hall of Fame Stadium, losing 3-1 to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and 4-3 to Rose State. Carl Albert finishes the season at 16-34.
In the loss to NEO, it was a Poteau connection which gave Carl Albert a lead of 1-0 as two former Lady Pirates combined to put the Lady Vikings ahead as Katie Pierce's RBI single scored Katie Odom in the second inning.
HEAVENER — The Poteau Pirates soccer team finds itself somewhere it had hoped to be at this time last year — the Class 4A state semifinals.
The Pirates avenged a 3-2 double-overtime loss to Heavener by doubling the Wolves 4-2 in the state quarterfinals Friday night at Harvey Stadium.
The Pirates (10-5) will play in the Class 4A state semifinals at 6 p.m. tonight on the road against Oklahoma City Mount St. Mary, which defeated Oklahoma City Southeast 2-0 in another state quarterfinal game Friday night.
The perfect season aspirations for the Wolves (11-1) came to a halt with the loss.
